The Week Ahead ...

Red Rally fever lives ... Bob Vazquez, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, offers his weekly insights on the accomplishments of the teams, coaches, and student-athletes who compete for Cal State Northridge ... The weekly report includes upcoming key games, and a report on what other activities are happening in the Matdor Athletic Department.

Red Rally ...

They have been there (win or lose) to cheer on the Matadors to victory ... They are called Red Rally, a group of highly vocal, highly enthusiastic students who have banded together at home games at The Matadome to cheer on the Matadors ... This year, their undying support has paid off in supporting a winning, entertaining men's basketball team that has a chance to win the Big West title and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament ... Their support has certainly given The Matadome a definite home court advantage as near capacity crowds have become the norm ... The Red Rally was started last year by the Union Program chair, Jonathan Martinez, and the Athletic Department ... The Red Rally supports CSUN games throughout the year by giving away free Red Rally shirts and various other giveaways to CSUN students as a way to gain support for Matador Athletics ... In the Matadome, the Red Rally Section is reserved for CSUN students with I.D. ... Section Seven is the specific section that is reserved for CSUN students ... The Red Rally numbers around 1,000 students, who attend games on a regular basis ... With the support of the Union Program Council and this year's Sports & Recreation Chair, Kristen Berry, the UPC is also supporting a student bus trip to the Big West Tournament in Anaheim for the first game that the men's basketball team participates in ... For $5, a CSUN student will receive transportation to and from Anaheim, game ticket, Red Rally Shirt, pom poms and more! ... Students can sign up with the USU cashier (in the Plaza del Sol) with their CSUN I.D. starting Monday, March 3 ... "The student section is great," said Matador basketball player Josh Jenkins. "They get me hyped for the game. Without their support, a lot of our wins would not have been possible. They have given us the will to win. Many of them join us at road games. We hear them cheer and scream for you. They are outstanding."

Matador Minute ...

Yes, they once played football (1962-2001) at Cal State Northridge ... Former Matadors star and current Arena Football quarterback Sherdrick Bonner (Chicago Rush) will play Monday on ESPN2, 6:00 p.m. PT, when the Rush hosts the San Jose Sabercats ... Bonner, entering his 15th season, needs 21 passing yards to become the third player in AFL history to throw for 41,000 yards ... also needs 71 touchdown passes to become the first player in pro football history to throw for 900 career touchdowns.
