Northridge, Calif. - Mary Gorman, who was a longtime and avid supporter of Cal State Northridge Athletics and San Fernando Valley resident, passed away on March 28th in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, April 9, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Eudes, 9901 Mason Ave., Chatsworth, Calif.

It was Matador volleyball that first brought Mary and her husband, Jim, into the CSUN community during the 1990's. The University's athletics program had just entered NCAA Division I and Mary and Jim were curious about the teams.

Their love of CSUN volleyball grew to all Matador teams. Mary Gorman was instrumental in creating information recycling awareness efforts at Matador Athletic events while Jim Gorman created the first Matador fan e-mail list-serve to promote attendance at games.

For many years, Mary and Jim Gorman were proud season ticket holders for multiple men's and women's sports demonstrating support for all Cal State Northridge teams.

Though neither Mary nor Jim attended Cal State Northridge, both served as distinguished members of CSUN's Alumni Association and Matador Athletics volunteer organizations.

While Jim Gorman held formal leadership positions such as President of the Matador Athletic Association and as a member of the President's Athletic Advisory and NCAA compliance committees, Mary was always at her husband's side as a friend and loyal advisor to Alumni Association and CSUN Athletics.

In 2005, the Gormans decided to make a permanent impact on CSUN Athletics by establishing the "Jim and Mary Gorman Athletic Scholarship Endowment". The Gormans' endowment provides scholarship assistance to a student-athlete who meets certain rigorous academic standards. Also in 2005, Mary and Jim Gorman created two planned gifts - deferred charitable gift annuities totaling $210,000 - to assure that their endowment would be well-funded in perpetuity.

In 2006, Mary and Jim were recipients of a Volunteer Service Award from CSUN Athletics.

In 2009, Mary and Jim Gorman were recognized with the Dorothea "Granny" Heitz Award for Outstanding Volunteer Leadership, honoring alumni or friends of the University who serve CSUN as outstanding volunteer role models.

"Cal State Northridge is blessed with wonderful friends who through the years have added to the fabric of the University," said Matador Athletics Director Rick Mazzuto. "Mary and Jim have been great examples of the strong bond between the University and the community. Mary's contribution to Cal State Northridge will always be remembered. She was a true friend to the University."
