The Week Ahead ...
Cal State Northridge tackles Pac-10 opponents in women's soccer and women's volleyball while the men's soccer team makes its first trip ever to the state of Wisconsin for a pair of non-league games ... Bob Vazquez, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, offers his weekly insights on the accomplishments of the teams, coaches, and student-athletes who compete for Cal State Northridge.
Kudos thus far to the Matadors women's soccer team which is off to its best start in school history at 4-0 ... Despite a losing record last year and its top three scorers, head coach Keith West said this year's team would be a hard-fighting, good soccer team ... And West has been right ... And the Matadors have played a quality schedule which have included wins over San Diego State and UNLV ... West has also scheduled a tough non-league campaign which includes games at Pac-10 powers Arizona State (9/19/08, 7:00 p.m.), at Arizona (9/21/08, 1:00 p.m.), and at NCAA champion USC (10/15/08, 1:00 p.m.) ... Next up is a challenging game in the St. Mary's Tournament against Pac-10 power California (9/12/08, 2:00 p.m.) in Moraga.
Mark down the evening of October 11 on your social calender ... The Cal State Northridge women's volleyball program is hosting an "Alumni Social" (5:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.) followed by a Big West match (7:00 p.m.) against Cal State Fullerton at The Matadome ... It will be a great opportunity for former Matador volleyball players to get together for complimentary appetizers, admisison to the match, a tour of campus, and an opportunity to catch up with other alumni ... Women's volleyball started in 1975 at Cal State Northridge ... The school's first head coach was Linda Murphy who chalked up a 46-19 record in her two seasons ... Murphy was an outstanding volleyball player in her day ... Murphy played on the first U.S. Olympic women's volleyball team at the Summer Games in 1964 in Tokyo, Japan ... According to current head coach Jeff Stork, Murphy still lives in the Northridge area ... During its history, Cal State Northridge volleyball has won eight league titles and three NCAA women's volleyball titles (1980, 1983, 1987) ... Seven of those league titles and all three NCAA titles were under the guidance of legendary head coach Walt Ker (401-144 record from 1979-92) ... Ker also started the men's volleyball program at Cal State Northridge in 1976 ... And where is Walt Ker today? ... Ker is a mortgage broker in Santa Clarita and also serves as a volunteer assistant men's volleyball coach at UCLA ... Also mark down the evening of October 25 on your calender ... It will be the second annual "Tip Off" Preview for the Matador men's and women's basketball program at The Matadome ... Bobby Braswell (men's head coach) and Staci Schulz (women's head coach) will introduce the players and conduct skill drills for season ticket holders, fans, donors, students, faculty and staff ... Food and refreshments, informational material, the CSUN cheerleaders and Matty the Matador, will also be present ... It will be a great opportunity to meet and get some autographs of your favorite Cal State Northridge players ... Admission is free ... Once the men's basketball schedule is finalized, season ticket information for both men's and women's basketball will be available at www.gomatadors.cstv.com ...
A newspaper article in the August 31 Los Angeles Daily News detailed the recent traffic accident involving Matador head coach Bobby Braswell ... We're happy to report that coach Braswell is feeling better each day, and is getting prepared for an exciting 2008-09 season ... At coach Braswell's request, he told just close friends about the accident, and only a couple members of the news media ... That request was honored ...
Last week, we told you about the Cal State Northridge men's basketball team starting the 2008-09 season with six straight road games after the home opener; a trip that covers more than 4,000 miles ... The Matador women's basketball team also will be chalking up a few thousand miles on the road ... Cal State Northridge will be making its first ever road trip to Alaska to compete in the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage (Nov 25-26) ... Total distance from Northridge to Anchorage, 2,986 miles ... And the men's soccer team heads to unchartered territory when the Matadors travel to Wisconsin to compete in the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Tournament ... It is the furthest east Cal State Northridge men's soccer has traveled since the 2004 season when the Matadors played at Boston College, and a trip to West Virginia in 2006 ... The distance from Northridge to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is 2,049 miles ...
Good to hear that former Matador basketball standouts Calvin Chitwood, Jonathan Heard and Jayme Miller have arrived safe and sound to play professional basketball in Japan, Finland and Holland, respectively ... While Chitwood's and Heard's seasons have yet to start, Miller's team (Aris Friesland) has already played its first game ... Miller scored 12 points in his professional debut as Aris Friesland scored a 40 point victory.
