The Week Ahead At Cal State Northridge ...
Five new members to the Matador Hall of Fame ... Bob Vazquez, Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations, offers his weekly insights on the accomplishments of the teams, coaches, and student-athletes who compete for Cal State Northridge.
Northridge Notes ...
It was a very tough decision but the Matador Athletic Hall of Fame Committee has picked four former student-athletes, one former coach, and one team for induction into the Cal State Northridge Hall of Fame ... The candidates are being contacted this week, and an official announcement of the new inductees will be announced later this week on www.gomatadors.com ... The decision was very difficult considering that 22 former student-athletes and coaches were all highly qualified along with two teams that were nominated ... Those not selected this year will be automatically placed into nomination on next year's ballot ... Congratulations to this year's winners who will be honored in a banquet on March 1, 2009 ... Hard to believe but true that nearly 900 fans, mostly CSUN students, turned out for a recent Monday night exhibition men's basketball game ... Yes, it was a Monday night which meant NFL Football on ESPN, and it was pre-election night, but the large turnout for an exhibition games bodes well that there is a renewed excitement for the Matadors men's basketball team as it prepares for its regular season home opener on Nov. 14 against Cal Lutheran ... Certainly, the pre-season attention that the team has received in the national magazines (predicting a league championship for the Matadors) is a catalyst for what promises to be an exciting season ahead ... For the first time in school history, the Matadors basketball team received a vote in the pre-season Associated Press men's basketball poll ... Only one vote, but a sign that there is a respect for CSUN basketball this year ... Several big name schools from major conferences didn't even get one vote ... CSUN opponents received a few votes ... UCLA (Dec. 7) received 1,487 votes (fourth in the pre-season) while New Mexico (Nov. 24) had three votes, and Stanford (Nov. 18) had two votes ... CSUN was the only Big West school to get a vote ... Cal State Northridge is ranked 25th in the pre-season CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll ... The Matadors generated 118 points ... Gonzaga is ranked #1 (754 points).
