The 9th Annual Watson Celebrity Basketball Game Hosted by Floyd “Money” Mayweather

On Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, the 9th Annual Watson Celebrity Basketball Game will take place at The Matadome at Cal State Northridge.
This year’s game will be hosted by world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather. The Watson Celebrity Basketball Game, a perennial sell out, is in its ninth year and brings out the elite in sports and entertainment. Past players have included some of the biggest names in sports such as NBA players Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden, major league baseball players Matt Kemp and Ryan Braun, and actors Terry Crews and Columbus Short.

This year's celebrity guests scheduled to attend are Floyd Mayweather, Adrien Broner, Danny Garcia, Peter Kid Chocolate Quillin, Sugar Shane Mosley, Victor Ortiz, Paulie Maglianaggi, Penny Hardaway, Laura and Gloria Govan Basketball Wives, Wesley Jonathan, Tank, Ginuwine, Ced the Entertainer, Mindless Behavior, and Anthony Anderson.
This year’s game is more than just a basketball contest. This year’s game at The Matadome is geared to be one of the largest yet, extending into the community of the San Fernando Valley while raising money to help children in need across Los Angeles County. Thousands of children have benefitted from the generosity of those involved in the tournament since it started in 2005.
“It’s great to give back,” said Mayweather. “The Watson Family has always been good to me. If it’s for a great cause, I am here to support it.”
This year a portion of the proceeds from tickets sales of the event will benefit the Lifedriven Foundation, an organization that works to connect children battling cancer with life changing experiences.
“We exist to accomplish one goal and that is to put smiles on the faces of children battling cancer through our Lifedriven Miracles Program,” said Chris Word, Founder and CEO of the Lifedriven Foundation.  “I know first hand about the need for a smile. I was diagnosed with Colon Cancer on March 31, 2005. It was during my cancer treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where I saw kids suffering from cancer, that I had the vision to start Lifedriven Foundation, to encourage children who are fighting for their lives.”

The Watson Family Classic Basketball Game started as a competitive game among friends.  Brandon Watson of the Watson Family shared, “This event started out as a way to get our friends together and have a good game of basketball. As it grew, we turned it into a toy drive and now it’s grown to the Watson Family Celebrity Basketball Game that supports local charities.”

When the Watson Family approached Dr. Brandon E. Martin, Cal State Northridge Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, with the opportunity to host this event at The Matadome, Dr. Martin thought this would be a great opportunity to support the community and bring a unique fan experience to Cal State Northridge and the San Fernando Valley.

“Bringing the Watson Family Classic to CSUN provides the opportunity for our students, campus and local community to have a unique experience on campus,” said Dr. Martin. “In addition to elevating Matador Athletics contests, my goal is to continuously provide entertaining and exciting events for our fans to enjoy in the San Fernando Valley region.”

The event was always held at a local high school, but Watson sees moving the game to Cal State Northridge as a great step for the event.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to work with Cal State Northridge Athletics and Dr. Martin to take the Watson Celebrity Basketball game to the next level,” Watson added.

The event will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on the patio outside the entrance to The Matadome with contests, games and prizes for the youth in attendance. Doors to The Matadome open at 4:00 p.m. and the game will start at 5:00 p.m. Music will be provided by DJ Qwess and advance tickets are available at the Cal State Northridge Associated Students ticket office by calling 818-677-2488.
