Matadors Face Pilots, Vikings before Christmas Holiday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (1-8) travels to Portland, Oregon for a pair of non-conference contests before the Christmas Holiday. On Friday, Dec. 18, the Matadors take on the West Coast Conference's Portland Pilots in a 2 p.m. game. Two days later, CSUN squares off with the Big Sky Conference's Portland State Pilots in another 2 p.m. match-up. Ghizal Hasan will be calling the all the action on the CSUN Sports Network and both contests will also feature live video and live stats with links available at GoMatadors.com. In their last game, the Matadors dropped a tight 67-65 decision to the San Diego State Aztecs. Trailing by two with less than 30 seconds to play, the Aztecs hit a late 3-pointer to escape with the victory. Freshman Claudia Ramos came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points and dish out a career-high five assists. Sophomores Serafina Maulupe and Tessa Boagni each finished with 11 points and Boagni led CSUN with nine rebounds, including six offensive boards.Â
This week, CSUN squares off with a pair of non-conference foes in The City of Roses. Portland is 2-8 overall and is coming off a 93-52 loss at Oregon. Sophomore Sara Zaragoza led the Pilots with 14 points and added four rebounds and a block in 26 minutes. Junior guard Kaylie Van Loo added 11 points and three rebounds in 27 minutes of action. For the season, Portland is shooting 38.4 percent from the field and averaging 31.3 rebounds per contest. The Matadors have won the last two meetings with the Pilots, but have never won on the road in the series.Â
Sunday, the Matadors take on the Portland State Vikings at the Peter W. Stott Center. The Vikings lost 85-64 to Seattle on Dec. 15 with freshman Corey James leading the squad with 16 points. Freshman Kian McNair added 13 points and five steals while a third freshman, Michaela Kay, added 11 points and four steals. The all-time series between the two schools is tied at 10-10 although the last game came in 2007.
After the Christmas Holiday, the Matadors return to action with a pair of road contests against Pac-12 opponents: Arizona State (Dec. 28) and California (Dec. 30).Â
Scouting Portland
- The University of Portland Pilots enter Friday's contest with a 2-8 overall record
- The Pilots, who play in the West Coast Conference, lost at Oregon 93-52 on Dec. 12
- Elise Woerner, a 6-0 freshman forward, leads Portland in scoring at 11 points per game
- Woerner is shooting 39.2 percent from the field and is second on the team with 36 rebounds
- Junior Corissa Turley is averaging 8.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest
- Junior Kaylie Van Loo leads the team with 29 assists and is shooting a team-high 55.6 percent from the field
- The Pilots are shooting 33.9 percent from 3-point range and average 31.3 rebounds per game this season
- CSUN has won the last two meetings with Portland, although the Matadors have never won on the road in the series
Scouting Portland State
- The Portland State Vikings enter the weekend with a 1-8 overall record and travel to Eugene to face Oregon on Dec. 17 at 6 p.m.
- The Vikings compete in the Big Sky Conference and posted a 90-76 over Corban University on Dec. 12 for their first win of the season
- On Dec. 15, the Vikings lost 85-64 to Seattle after shooting 24.6 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from 3-point rangeÂ
- Freshman Michaela Kay leads the team in scoring at 10.1 points per game while shooting 32.7 percent from the field
- Kay is also averaging 3.0 rebounds and leads the squad with 28 assists
- Sophomore Cici West leads the Vikings in rebounding at 9.1 per game while also averaging 8.4 ppg
- Portland State is shooting 34.4 percent from the field and 26.6 percent from 3-point range for the season
- The Vikings have taken 45 more free throws than their opponents and average 46.1 rebounds per game through nine games
- The all-time series between the two schools is tied at 10-10 although they have not faced each other since 2007
