NORTHRIDGE, CA---
With a 2-1 victory over host Japan in the World Baseball Softball Confederation's (WBSC) U-18 World Cup Gold Medal Game, Team USA earned its third-consecutive world championship on Sunday at Koshien Stadium in Osaka. Serving as pitching coach for Team USA over the past three months, CSUN Baseball head coach Greg Moore concluded his stint with the national team with a World Cup victory.
Â
Flashing its calling card, Team USA earned the victory with outstanding pitching, holding Japan to one run in the contest. Over nine games, Team USA outscored its opponents 56-23 en route to posting an 8-1 record. Moore's pitching staff allowed only 2.56 runs per game in the tournament.
Â
With the championship win, Team USA avenged an earlier 3-0 loss to Japan on day two of competition. The team also has posted back-to-back gold medal game victories over Japan.
Â
The World Cup competition in Osaka is the culmination of a busy summer for Moore. Beginning in June, the CSUN Baseball head coach served as coach for National Team Trials in Cary, N.C. and in Fullerton, CA. After the national team's roster was finalized in August, Moore traveled to Taipei, Taiwan to assist the team with coaching duties for three exhibition contests. Just two days after the final exhibition against Taiwan, the team then traveled to Osaka, Japan to compete in the World Cup.Â
