NORTHRIDGE, CA---
After scoring goals in five straight matches, including registering three goals last week, CSUN Women's Soccer's Cynthia Sanchez was named the Big West Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Sanchez posted both of the Matadors' goals against Fresno State in a 2-1 victory and she got the offense rolling with a goal in the opening minutes of CSUN's 3-0 win over Detroit.
Â
"Cynthia is playing very well this season," said head coach Keith West. "Her talent and work rate is awesome. The team as a whole has done a great job of finding her on the field to score the goals. This award is a great achievement for her but also for the team."
Â
A sophomore from Gilroy, CA, Sanchez utilized her speed and precision on the pitch to lead the Matadors offensively to a pair of victories.
At Fresno State on Friday, Sept. 4, Sanchez registered a brace before halftime. In the 21st minute, Sanchez was the recipient of a series of quick passes including a short pass from Kourtney Kutscher, which put Sanchez in position to strike a shot into the goal from inside the box. Minutes later, Sanchez received a long pass from Breanna McCallum in a similar part of the box where she continued to her right to rifle in her second goal to put CSUN ahead 2-0.
Â
Against Detroit on Sunday, Sept. 6, Sanchez wasted little time scoring in CSUN's match with Detroit. In the 2nd minute, Lyndsey Preston forced a turnover at midfield and kicked ahead to a streaking Sanchez, who raced to the net and scored. Utilizing the momentum of the early goal, CSUN earned a 3-0 victory to win its fifth-straight game.
Â
After earning a Big West Conference Honorable Mention and a spot on the conference's All-Freshman Team last season, Sanchez is off to an outstanding start this season. She has scored a goal in five straight contests and she has already doubled her goal total from a year ago with her six goals this season. By hitting the back of the net six times, Sanchez is tied for the ninth-most goals in a season in school history.
Â
Sanchez has anchored a Matador offense that has scored two or more goals in five straight contests. She has also helped CSUN to its longest winning streak, five games, since 2005. With a 5-1 start to 2015, the Matadors have also matched their best six-game start since the 2005 season.
Â
In her Matador career, Sanchez has tallied nine goals, totaled 18 points and recorded five game-winning goals.
Â
Sanchez is the first Matador to receive a weekly Big West Conference honor since Jovani McCaskill earned Defensive Player of the Week on October 6, 2014.
Â
The Matadors return to the field on Friday to compete in the Nike Portland Invitational. CSUN faces Washington on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and squares off with Portland on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.Â
