En Español
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (8-6-5) defeated Sacramento State in a penalty kick shootout (6-5) in a Big West Conference Tournament Semifinal Wednesday night at Matador Soccer Field. After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, the teams went to a shootout and seniors Kevin Marquez and Patrick Hickman helped lift the Matadors to the Big West Tournament Championship match, which the Matadors will host against Cal State Fullerton at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12.Â
CSUN and Sacramento State played a spirited 110 minutes, exchanging near-misses throughout the match. Penalties were called upon after a goal could not be found and both teams made their first five attempts. Sacramento State sent Alex Bettencourt in the sixth round of the shootout and his attempt was saved by Marquez. Hickman then punched home his attempt from the spot to send CSUN to the Championship match.Â
Marquez made three saves in net to record his fourth shutout of the season as the match is officially considered a draw. All three of his stops came in the first half and his biggest stop came on an attempt from the Hornets' Nate Nugen in the 16th minute.Â
CSUN finished the match with a season-high 21 shots and put seven on frame. In the first half, Shane Steffes had an attempt punched over the crossbar and Jeremy Degraffenreidt had a shot cleared off the line by a Hornet defender.
In the second half, Papi Diouf had an early look at goal spoiled by a charging Sacramento State goalkeeper that cut down the angle on a one-on-one situation. Emmanuel Usen Jr. had a strong match for CSUN all night and had three challenging attempts on frame denied by the Hornets' James Del Curto. Both Usen Jr. and Diouf finished with six shots in the contest.Â
Gabe Robinson nearly found an overtime winner in the 94th minute, but his shot rang off the crossbar and back into play. CSUN held a narrow 5-4 advantage in corner kicks and the Matadors committed 17 fouls compared to nine for Sacramento State. Steffes saw a yellow card in the 104th minute of action and two Hornets were also cautioned.Â
CSUN will now host the Big West Tournament Championship against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday afternoon. The Titans posted a 2-1 victory at UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday night. This marks CSUN's third time in the tournament championship, having reached it in 2012 and 2013, but both of those contests were on the road.
