NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- This morning, the NCAA Committee on Infractions released its decision relating to an investigation into CSUN's Men's Basketball team.
"Today, the NCAA Committee on Infractions agreed with the self-imposed sanctions that the university and our Men's Basketball program enacted after we informed the NCAA of violations of its rules," CSUN President Dianne F. Harrison said. "I am confident that the measures enacted since the violations were discovered, along with the leadership of Dr. Brandon Martin, put all of our student-athletes in a position to succeed in and out of the classroom. Self-reporting violations and self-imposing sanctions was the right thing to do, and it put the university in position to move this program forward."
With the Men's Basketball season underway, CSUN Athletics looks forward to moving forward.
"CSUN Athletics is absolutely committed to the pursuit and attainment of comprehensive excellence in all that we do. Reggie Theus models this pursuit in his role as head coach of our Men's Basketball program," CSUN Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Brandon Martin said. "Immediately upon learning of potential violations in 2014, we self-reported the violations to the NCAA and proactively appointed an independent investigator. I am proud of the way the university, Matador Athletics and the Men's Basketball program faced these violations aggressively, without hesitation and showed our values in action. We put the success of our student-athletes at the heart of all that we do. We will not tolerate anything less. It is clear by the NCAA's actions today; it was the morally and ethically correct decision by the university, and it allows us to put these issues behind us as we continue to build a successful basketball program. Like many of our student, alumni and community stakeholders, I am excited to see the Matadors continue their journey of excellence this season."
CSUN Men's Basketball Coach Reggie Theus has served as coach of the Matadors since 2013.
"It is clear that the NCAA saw how seriously we took the discovery of violations of NCAA and university rules," Theus said. "The university administration and I take these issues seriously, and champion the overall well-being of student-athletes. I sincerely appreciate the support of President Harrison, Dr. Brandon Martin and the CSUN community through these past two seasons and am happy we are now moving forward. All along, I've seen this incident as a learning opportunity for our student-athletes and a chance for the team to come together. The team is ready to continue to compete — on the court and in the classroom, and the future looks bright for these young men."
