Point Guard Arrives at CSUN after Prepping at Australian Institute of Sport
NORTHRIDGE, CA ---
The CSUN women' s basketball team has signed Lizzy Tonks to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to compete for the Matadors beginning in the 2016-17 season, head coach Jason Flowers announced. A 5-8 point guard from Coffs Harbour, Australia, Tonks comes to CSUN after prepping at the prestigious Basketball Australia National Centre of Excellence (NCE) at the Australian Institute of Sport. Â
"We are extremely excited about Lizzie joining our program. She is a tough, competitive point guard who has played against top competition in Australia and internationally," Flowers said about the New South Wales native. "Her experience at the NCE will help her tremendously as she transitions into helping our program reach new heights. She is an outstanding young woman who will contribute in multiple ways to the CSUN community."Â

At the NCE, Tonks earned a gold medal for Australia at the FIBA Oceania 3x3 Tournament and helped New South Wales to a spot in the semifinals at the U-20 Australian Junior Championships.Â
She received the invitation to attend the NCE after competing in a pair of Australian Junior camps and trials and has been a member of the Basketball Australia U-17 and U-19 squad that participated in the Oceania Championships to qualify for the World Championships. In fact, she helped Australia earn another gold medal by capturing the 2014 U19 FIBA Oceania Championship.Â
After leaving Coffs Harbor, which is located between Sydney and Brisbane in New South Wales, she attended Loreto College and helped lead the squad to a state championship in 2014 in the Under-18 Division.
Tonks joins a pair of incoming freshmen who signed NLIs in the early period during the fall of 2015. Lauren Shymkewicz is a 6-3 product from Ralston, NE while Eliza Matthews is a 6-1 local product from Long Beach Poly High School. All three will join the Matadors for the start of the 2016-17 season and have four years of eligibility remaining.Â
