NORTHRIDGE, CA - CSUN junior Sam Engel became the fourth Matador in the last three years to be named an All-America Scholar by Cleveland Golf/Srixon. Engel was one of 212 Division I players to earn the honor.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke average under 76.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2. Each recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college of university.
Engel, who recently completed his junior season at CSUN, is a Recreation Tourism Management major from Scottsdale, AZ. He joins Michael O'Connor (2013, 2014) and Steven Molumby (2015) who were also named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars in recent years.Â
"Sam does a really good job of balancing his academics and golf; he prioritizes one over the other when he needs to," said head coach Jim Bracken. "My priorities for the team have always been academics first, golf second and everything else after. We look forward to continued success in the classroom as well as on the golf course."
Also a two-time Big West All-Academic selection (2015, 2016), Engel played in all 12 tournaments for CSUN this past season. He finished the 2015-16 season with a 75.5 scoring average with his best finish coming at the OGIO UCSB Invitational (Apr. 11-12) where he tied for 12th with a three over-par 219.Â
