SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
On the third day of competition at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State University, the Cal State Northridge Matadors (6-5) were defeated 13-3 by the San Diego Toreros (8-3) on Saturday at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Northridge took a 4-3 victory over San Diego at the Invitational on Thursday in the two teams' first meeting.
The Toreros went on the attack early, scoring four runs over the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead. Northridge answered back in the bottom of the second as Adam Barry and Miles Williams singled with one out and Alexis Mercado walked to load the bases. Brett Balkan scored Barry from third with a ground out to the shortstop to record the RBI.
The Toreros responded with runs in the third and fourth innings and led 7-1 before the Matadors scored in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Chester Pak drew a walk to force in the run.
San Diego continued its hot hitting to extend the lead to 12-2 going into the eighth inning. The Matadors scored their final run of the day in the bottom of eighth as another bases loaded walk brought home a runner. This time, Nathan Ring was put aboard with two outs to score Williams, who went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Northridge.
Barry went 1-for-4 with a single and a run scored and also drew a walk. The Matadors picked up seven walks in the game and Todd Eskelin was hit by a pitch and scored a run.
Cal State Northridge will wrap up play at the Aztec Invitational presented by Sheraton Mission Valley on Sunday, Mar. 4 against San Diego State. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. and fans are encouraged to monitor Twitter (@GoMatadors) for any delays in the start time.
