Northridge Drops Seesaw Battle 5-4 to Rhode Island
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
Unable to mount a late rally, the Cal State Northridge Matadors (8-8) lost 5-4 to the Rhode Island Rams (5-8) on Tuesday afternoon at Matador Field. A two-out two-run single by Milan Adams in the top of the seventh proved to be the game winner for the Rams.
Rhode Island was the first to score as Greg Annarummo reached on a fielding error and advanced to third on the play in the top of the second inning. He came around to score on a Pat Fortunato single with one out.
The Matadors struck back for two runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead at 2-1. Catcher Marty Bowen opened the inning with a walk and later scored from first on a Kyle Attl RBI double down the left field line with two outs. Ryan Raslowsky followed with an RBI single to right center field to score Attl.
The Rams regained the lead at 3-2 in the top of the third inning after the leadoff man singled to right field. An errant throw on a putout attempt at first base allowed Rhode Island to have runners at the corners with no outs. Jeff Famiglietti then stole second base and Jeff Roy scored on the play as the throw down to second ricocheted off of the runner. A one-out single scored Famiglietti later in the frame.
A wild home half of the fifth resulted in two runs for the Matadors to give them a 4-3 lead. With two outs, Matthew Moreno singled to the shortstop. Adam Barry then struck out swinging but reached first base on the wild pitch. The catcher attempted to throw him out at first and his throw sailed wide down the right field line, allowing Moreno to score and Barry to reach third.
Miles Williams followed with a single to left center field to score Barry on a full-count pitch.
The final runs of the game were scored by Rhode Island in the seventh as the Rams were able to load the bases with two outs. Adams delivered with a two-run single to put Rhode Island ahead for good.
Raslowsky led the Northridge offense by going 2-for-4 at the plate with a run batted in. Williams and Attl were the other two Matadors with an RBI and Bowen scored a run and walked twice.
Relief pitcher Sean Furney (1-0) was credited for the win for Rhode Island while Harley Holt (0-2) took the loss for the Matadors. Mike Bradstreet earned his third save of the season for the Rams.
