Sergio Brown Named Cal State Northridge Assistant Baseball Coach
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –
Sergio Brown has been named an assistant coach for the Cal State Northridge baseball program, head coach Matt Curtis announced today. Brown will work primarily with the infielders, baserunners, and hitters, while coordinating the recruiting efforts for the Matadors.
"Sergio Brown brings a wealth of experience in developing championship programs in the Big West Conference," said Northridge head coach Matt Curtis. "He has been a big part of programs that consistently compete in the post-season, and on a national level."
Brown joins Cal State Northridge after serving as an assistant coach for one season at UC San Diego in 2012. While with the Tritons, Brown was responsible for organizing recruiting efforts and working with the hitters and fielders. In 2011, the team won the CCAA regular season and tournament championships and advanced to the NCAA Division II West Regional.
Prior to working at UCSD, Brown was an assistant coach for a pair of Big West schools for a decade. He served as the recruiting coordinator for the Cal State Fullerton Titans from 2007-10 and annually built recruiting classes that were regarded among the nation's best.
"He is generally recognized as one of the best recruiting coaches on the West Coast," continued Curtis. "His experience and network will be a huge boost in our recruiting efforts."
During that time, the Titans won a pair of Big West championships in 2008 and 2010 and finished seventh at the 2009 College World Series. During his final two seasons, Fullerton hitters led the Big West in batting average, hits, runs, RBIs, on-base percentage and sacrifice bunts.
Brown worked with various parts of the offense and coordinating the recruiting efforts for the UC Irvine Anteaters as well from 2004-07. During his time at Irvine the team made the NCAA Tournament twice, including a third-place finish at the 2007 College World Series. As an assistant coach with Fullerton and Irvine, 60 of Brown's student-athletes received All-Big West recognition.
Before joining UC Irvine, Brown was the director of baseball operations at Cal State Fullerton from 2001-03. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Cypress Community College from 1995-2001.
Brown was a member of the 1995 National Championship team at Cal State Fullerton as the Titans finished the season with a 57-9 record. He also played three seasons as an infielder at Cal Poly Pomona before transferring to Fullerton.
Brown earned his Bachelor's Degree in English from Cal State Fullerton in 1995 and finished his Master's Degree in education from Azusa Pacific University in 1998.
"We are excited to add Sergio Brown to our staff," concluded Curtis.
