NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -
After a remarkable debut season that earned him Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year and Freshman All-America honors, Cal State Northridge sophomore left-handed pitcher Jerry Keel was named to the All-Big West Conference Second Team by College Sports Madness this week. Keel is entering his second season with the Matadors and is the lone weekend starter returning from 2012.
As a freshman, Keel went 6-3 in 16 appearances (13 starts) for Northridge. In 91.1 innings, he recorded a team-best 2.07 ERA and compiled 48 strikeouts while walking just 24 batters. Keel pitched two complete games for the Matadors as well, earning one in both the opening Big West series at Cal State Fullerton and over the final weekend of the year at Pacific.
Against the then-No. 13 Titans, Keel allowed just a first-inning run and struck out three batters while scattering nine hits to help the Matadors leave Goodwin Field with a 5-1 victory. He ended the season with an eight-inning complete game at Pacific, allowing just one earned run in a 2-1 defeat.
In addition to winning the league's Freshman Pitcher of the Year award, Keel was also named to the All-Big West Conference Second Team at the end of last season.
