Mike Nisco enters his first year on staff with Cal State Northridge. Nisco will be instrumental in assisting Head Coach Greg Moore in coordinating the day to day operations of the Matadors baseball program. Nisco will focus on the areas of fundraising, marketing and social media while assisting John Lockwood with coordinating the strength and conditioning program.
Nisco spent the last two seasons as the pitching coach at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma for Head Coach Travis Janssen. In the coaching staff’s first year at NSU, Nisco mentored a pitching staff who helped the River Hawks to a 25-24 record after the team won only 6 games the year before their arrival. The 19 game improvement was the 3rd best increase in wins by any Division II program in the country and the first winning season for Northeastern State in over 10 years. During the 2013 season, the River Hawks saw their win total climb as they reached the post season for the first time since 2001. In his two years at Northeastern State, Nisco helped the pitching staff reduce its ERA by 3.50 runs.
While at Northeastern State, Nisco also assisted with catchers, ran the strength and conditioning program, and assisted with recruiting. With Nisco’s support, the overall team GPA rose from a 2.2 to over a 3.0 in the first year.
Prior to his arrival at Northeastern State, Nisco was the varsity pitching coach at De La Salle High School in Concord, CA and assisted new Head Coach Matt Castello. During his year at De La Salle, Nisco oversaw the baseball strength and conditioning program for the Spartans team which saw 14 of its players move onto the collegiate level. With the help of Nisco, the first year coaching staff helped turn the Spartans from a 9-15 team to a 20-8 finish and a trip to the Northern California Sectional title game. The Spartan’s pitching saw its team ERA drop by over 3.00 runs during that season, finishing with a 1.90 team ERA.
In addition, Nisco was the associate head coach and pitching coach for the Walnut Creek Crawdads summer collegiate team (2012 & 2013). Along with his many duties on the field, Nisco also oversaw and directed all of the summer youth camps hosted by the Crawdads. In the summer prior to coaching the Crawdads, Nisco was the General Manager and Head Coach for the 16U and 18U Concord Zephyrs travel ball team in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Nisco pitched for 4 years at the Division I level for Saint Mary’s College in the West Coast Conference. After his time in Moraga, CA, Nisco pursued an opportunity to pitch one season professionally in the Italian Baseball League.
Nisco received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business Administration from Saint Mary’s College in 2007 and a Master’s degree in Health and Kinesiology from Northeastern State in 2012.
