Matadors Drop Series Finale to Seattle University 4-3

Feb. 20, 2011

Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -

Junior catcher Steven Keller went 3-for-4 and junior third baseman Tommy Simis recorded two doubles, but the Cal State Northridge Matadors (2-2) could not rally to beat the Seattle University Redhawks (2-2) Sunday at Matador Field.

The Matadors jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when centerfielder Drew Muren recorded his third RBI of the season. Senior TS Reed singled to shortstop with one out and stole second base, his first theft of the season. On the play, the catcher's throw down was wide and Reed was able to advance to third safely. Muren grounded out to bring home the run.

Northridge extended its lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning following a leadoff single by Keller. Simis promptly doubled to the gap in left-center field and scored Keller from first.

In the top of the third, Seattle evened the score when Josh Kalalau hit his second homerun of the season, a two-run shot to left field off starter Paul Tremlin. Tremlin settled down and got out of the inning before being replaced by senior Ryan Juarez in the fourth.

The Matadors regained the lead in the fourth frame, thanks in part to Simis' second double of the day. With two outs and Simis on second, senior Ridge Carpenter singled up the middle for an RBI base hit to make it 3-2. The Redhawks answered in their half of the fifth to tie the game at 3 and took the lead for good in the seventh.

Juarez (0-1) pitched four innings for Northridge and gave up two runs on three hits to take his first loss of the season. Sophomore Joshua Goossen-Brown moved from his position at first base to pitch the eighth and ninth innings for CSUN.

Designated hitter Adam Barry went 2-for-3 from the plate today and recorded his first stolen base of the year.

The Matadors return to action next Friday when they host the Valparaiso Crusaders for four games at Matador Field. A doubleheader with Valparaiso is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 26. First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled at 2 p.m.
