Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - A six strikeout performance by Cal State Northridge (16-13) starter Ryan Juarez during his 7.1 innings on the mound kept his team within striking distance on the road against Cal State Bakersfield (13-15). Unfortunately for CSUN, the Roadrunners scored three runs in the final innings of the game to earn the first win of the weekend by a score of 6-3.

The series will now shift to Northridge for the final games of the weekend; first pitch on both Saturday and Sunday will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Matador Field.

With both teams unable to score in the first inning, it was Northridge that jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the very next frame.

After leading off the top of the second inning with a double to centerfield, designated hitter Jason Dabbs drove in his fourth run of the season on his fielder's choice to the shortstop to give the Matadors' their first lead of the game.

Bakersfield would shift the lead towards their dugout in the bottom half of the same inning when a leadoff triple by designated hitter Jason Kudlock would start a two run, three hit effort by the `Runners.

After taking the lead in the second, Bakersfield added another run in the bottom of the third to extend their advantage to 3-1.

The crowd at Hardt Field would witness an old-fashioned pitching duel as starters Juarez and Mickey Jannis would take turns retiring the opposition in order in the fourth and fifth innings.

A single to left field from C.J. Belanger would jump-start the second scoring opportunity of the afternoon for the Matadors in the top of the sixth inning. After reaching base, the right-fielder would advance to second when Ryan Pineda was hit-by-a-pitch for the seventh time on the season, and score on Dominic D'Anna's single to left field to trim the `Runner lead to a single run.

Unfortunately for CSUN, the Bakersfield lead would increase to two runs once again in the bottom of the seventh inning when a single through the right side of the infield from Martin Medina drove in teammate Brandon Boren from second base.

It was the action in the bottom of the eighth inning that would make the Matador comeback efforts even more challenging as Bakersfield would score another two runs to double their lead to a 6-2 margin.

Having successfully engineered late-inning rallies earlier in the season, CSUN came out swinging in the ninth inning.

Three consecutive singles from the bats of D'Anna, third baseman Justin DeMarco, and left-fielder Ridge Carpenter would load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate.

DeMarco's single through the right side would cap a 3-for-4 effort for the third baseman on the afternoon, a performance that also included his 11th double of the season.

A wild pitch thrown by Jannis enabled all three runners to advance one base, with D'Anna touching home plate to shave the `Runner lead to 6-3.

But that would be as close as CSUN would get to eliminating the deficit as Jannis picked up the final three outs to earn a complete game victory over the Matadors.
