Three-Run Seventh Inning Fuels Matador Comeback Over San Diego State
April 13, 2010
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - A three-run seventh inning fueled by some timely hitting from Brad Decater and Ridge Carpenter propelled Cal State Northridge (18-14) to a come-from-behind victory over San Diego State (15-18) Tuesday afternoon at Matador Field.
In a contest that saw both teams combine for just 11 total hits, CSUN was unable to get much going on offense until the bottom of the seventh inning.
It was then, trailing 2-0 with two outs and runners on first and second base, Matador skipper Steve Rousey inserted Decater into the lineup as a pinch-hitter. Decater responded by pulling a 3-1 pitch through the left side of the infield, scoring C.J. Belanger from second, with Chris Allen going from first to third base on the play.
Belanger initially reached base on a bunt single to lead off the inning, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Justin DeMarco. Allen, also inserted as a pinch-hitter, reached first after drawing a walk.
On the very next pitch, with Carpenter at the plate, Decater advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Aztec pitcher John Pecoraro.
Carpenter then ripped a double down the right-field line that brought home both Allen and Decater, giving the Matadors their first lead of the afternoon.
All three runs came with two outs in the inning.
Then, with one out in the top of the eighth inning, CSUN brought in Billy Ott to preserve the Matadors' one-run cushion.
Ott went on to retire five of the six batters he faced, including a perfect ninth, to pick up the save and help CSUN capture the victory.
The Matador battery surrendered just five hits to the Aztecs on the afternoon.
The Matadors return to action on Friday when they return to Big West play against Cal Poly at Matador Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
