Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Ridge Carpenter doubled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Cal State Northridge (19-14, 1-3 BWC) to a come-from-behind victory over Cal Poly (9-22, 2-5) 10-9 Friday afternoon at Matador Field.

Carpenter finished the afternoon with three hits, including his second home run of the season, and finished with three RBI's.

The left-fielder was not the only Matador who was successful at the plate; TS Reed finished with two RBI's and hit two of the six Matador doubles, while teammate Brad Decater finished with three hits and also drove in two runs.

After seeing Cal Poly score a run in each of their first two sets of at-bats, CSUN came to the plate looking to swing the momentum in their direction in the bottom of the second inning.

Dominic D'Anna led off the inning with a single through the right side, eventually advancing all the way to third base after a wild pitch and an infield dribbler off the bat of C.J. Belanger.

A Carpenter single later in the inning would bring home D'Anna and give Northridge its first run of the afternoon.

Shortly thereafter, Reed ripped a double to deep left field that scored Belanger from second, and Carpenter all the way from first to give CSUN its first lead of the game, 3-2.

After a hitless top-half of the third by the Mustangs, DeMarco kept the Matadors' momentum alive by tripling down the left field line to lead off the inning. The next batter, D'Anna, hit a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield that allowed DeMarco to score from third and push the Northridge advantage to two.

After another flawless inning by Ryan Juarez in the top of the fourth, CSUN would add two more runs in their next set of at-bats after Brad Decater singled in Drew Muren and DeMarco to give the Matadors a 6-2 lead after four innings of play.

Muren reached base after hitting a one-out double earlier in the inning, while DeMarco drew a walk in the very next at-bat.

After seeing Cal Poly pick up a run in the top of the fifth inning, Northridge responded by adding two more runs in their next set of at-bats.

Carpenter belted the second pitch of the inning deep over the right-center field fence to give the Matadors their first run of the fifth, while Ryan Pineda scored the second thanks to some heads-up base running by the junior second-baseman.

After knocking a one-out single up the middle earlier in the inning, Pineda stole second to give CSUN a runner in scoring position with two outs.

Then, after a hard-hit grounder to the second-baseman by DeMarco, Pineda rounded third and saw DeMarco reach base safely. Pineda then bolted for home plate, catching the Mustangs off-guard to give Northridge an 8-3 advantage after five innings of play.

However, the Matadors would see their lead slip away, as Cal Poly would score six straight runs over the course of their next three innings to give themselves a 9-8 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.

But CSUN responded with its fourth multi-run inning of the game to take back the lead for good.

With no outs and a man on first, Belanger hit a double to right-centerfield that scored Kyle Attl from first base to tie the game at nine apiece.

Belanger would score shortly thereafter when Carpenter picked up his third hit of the game by knocking the first pitch he saw to deep center field to give the Matadors the lead going into the final inning.

Jimmy Jolicoeur finished the Mustangs off by pitching a perfect ninth to give CSUN its first Big West victory of the season.

Last week the Matadors competed in five non-conference games during their Conference bye week.
