Matadors Drop Series Finale Against Cal Poly, 5-3
April 18, 2010
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - A late-inning rally by Cal State Northridge (20-15, 2-4 BWC) came up just short against Cal Poly (10-23, 3-6 BWC) as the Matadors fell to the visiting Mustangs 5-3 Sunday afternoon at Matador Field.
Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Northridge staged a two-out rally to put itself in position to steal the series finale against Cal Poly.
Ring scored from second base after a Ryan Pineda dribbler down the third-base line forced an errant throw by Mustang third-baseman Evan Busby.
Head Coach Steve Rousey then made the decision to insert Drew Muren as a pinch-hitter. Muren proceeded to rip a double into the gap in left-centerfield, allowing Pineda to score all the way from first base to cut the Mustang lead to 5-2.
Then, Justin DeMarco stepped to the plate and pulled a 0-1 pitch through the left side of the infield to score Muren from second and give CSUN its third run of the inning.
All three of the CSUN runs in the seventh came with two outs.
The Matadors looked poised to erase the Mustang lead in the bottom of the ninth, as an infield single by TS Reed and a bunt single by Muren put runners on first and second with two outs.
Unfortunately for CSUN, Cal Poly would record the final out to end the game.
With the Matadors trailing 4-0 in the top of the sixth, pitcher Bryan Longpre entered the game and did a stellar job of keeping Northridge within striking distance.
Longpre pitched the final four innings for CSUN, giving up just one run on four hits.
There were three Matadors with multiple hits on the afternoon. Dominic D'Anna led the way with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, while Reed hit two singles and Muren came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI.
The Matadors return to action this Friday when they travel to Stockton to take on Pacific in the first of a three-game series against the Tigers.
