BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Seven Cal State Northridge (23-30) pitchers would combine their efforts to limit the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners (11-35) to only three hits in their second and final meeting of the season, with the Matadors leaving Bakersfield with a 3-0 shutout victory, sweeping the season series in the process.
The Matador arms also struck out a total of nine batters, and allowed only three walks throughout the game.
The mound was not the only place where Slover was able to inflict damage against the host 'Runners as his bunt single in the fifth inning would eventually evolve into the winning run of the day.
With Slover already on first base, Ryan Pineda hit a double (his 14th of the year) down the left field line, enabling the designated hitter to motor around the diamond to score the first run of the day for Northridge.
'Runner catcher Jeremy Rodriguez had positioned himself perfectly on the play as he was able to block off a majority of the plate and force Slover to find a creative way to break the 0-0 tie.
Instead of sliding around the catcher, Slover just made a typical feet-first slide underneath the left leg of Rodriguez, nudging him off the plate with enough force to create the amount of room needed to touch home plate while avoiding the tag in the process.
Two batters later, Pineda would score the second run of the frame for Northridge on an single to centerfield off the bat of C.J. Belanger.
Bakersfield starting pitcher Mickey Jannis would go the distance pitching all nine innings, striking out ten Matadors in his team's final home game of their inaugural season.
Jannis was able to keep his team within striking distance, but the Roadrunner batters just could not find any success against the Matador pitching staff on the afternoon as Northridge was able to strikeout or induce a double play to negate any potential scoring opportunity from taking place.
The Matadors now have two days off before they travel to UC Davis to face the Aggies in a three-game weekend series to finish out the season. All three games will be broadcast online and available on GameTracker at www.GoMatadors.com.
