NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge baseball team (23-31) defeated No. 9 Cal State Fullerton, 5-4, in the first game of a Big West Conference series at Matador Field. Marty Bowen had a key two-run double and Paul Tremlin snuffed out a Titan rally as the Matadors got another superb starting effort from Vincent Roberts.

A week after tossing CSUN's first complete game shutout in five years, Roberts held the powerful Titan line-up at bay to improve his record to 3-6 on the season. He allowed only two hits and one unearned run in 6.2 innings of work, adding five strikeouts and four walks.

For the season, Roberts is now 3-6 with a team-best 3.44 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 81 innings of work.

Tremlin earned his third save of the year by slamming the door on a Fullerton rally in the ninth. After entering the game with runners on the corners and no outs, Tremlin set the next three Titans down in order and struck out the final batter looking. He is now 2-6 with a 4.04 ERA and 31 K's on the season.

At the plate, Northridge led wire-to-wire behind some timely hitting. Matthew Moreno was 3-for-4 on the day, collecting an RBI and a run scored.

CSUN started things by scoring a run in the first thanks to a throwing error on a double steal. Ridge Carpenter was hit by a pitch and Adam Barry drew a walk with one out. During the next at-bat, both broke on a pitch and the throw from the Titan catcher sailed down the left field line to score Carpenter.

The Matadors added another in the sixth on thanks to a two-out rally. Miles Williams lifted a high fly ball down the left field line that no Titan could reach for his third double of the season. He came around to score on an RBI single by Moreno. All of that was accomplished with two outs.

After the Titans answered with an run in their half of the seventh, Northridge got two across thanks to Bowen's fourth double of the season. With two outs, Drew Muren laced his 17th double of the season to right center and Steven Keller delivered a single up the middle.

That brought up Bowen, who roped a two-bagger past the Titan third baseman to score both runners. Bowen now has 23 RBIs on the year.

Fullerton closed to within one in the thanks to two runs in the eighth, but the Matadors had another answer. Moreno singled with one out and quickly stole second. With two down, Carpenter delivered a double, his 10th of the year, to right center to score what would be the game-winning run.

Both teams attacked the basepaths all day, combining for nine steals in 10 attempts. Barry had two steals to raise his season total to seven while Carpenter swiped his team-leading 16th of the year.

The Matadors' victory Friday snapped a five-game losing streak to the Titans. They'll look to take the series Saturday when the teams resume the series at 1 p.m. at Matador Field.
