Honolulu, Hi. – It was a tale of two halves for the Cal State Northridge basketball team.
In the first half against a talented Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors squad, the Matadors jumped to an 11-10 lead at the 13:38 mark, and increased its margin to as many as seven points, 20-13, with 9:23 on the clock.
Hawai'i mounted its own comeback. The Rainbow Warriors outscored Cal State Northridge, 19-3, in the next 5:30 to take its biggest lead of the game of the first half, 32-23.
However, Cal State Northridge refused to wilt, cutting the Hawai'i lead to only two points, 34-32, with 52 seconds on the clock.
The first half ended with Cal State Northridge trailing Hawai'i, 37-34.
But in the second half, Hawai'i used its rebounding strength and transition game that featured a 7-foot center (Davis Rozitis), a 6-foot-10 center (Vander Joaquin), a 6-foot-7 forward (Trevor Wiseman) and a long-range three-point shooter in Zane Johnson (6-foot-6 guard) to outscore CSUN, 49-33.
Hawai'i led by as many as 25 points, 75-40, with 8:30 in the game.
The Rainbow Warriors eventually scored an 86-67 victory over the Matadors in a nationally-televised game on ESPN. The game was played at the Stan Sheriff Center on the campus of the University of Hawai'i.
The game started at 11:00 p.m. (Hawaii time on November 14) that translated to 1:00 a.m. (November 15) on the West Coast.
Stephan Hicks, the redshirt freshman, has emerged in only two games as the offensive and defensive star for Cal State Northridge. Following his 19-point, eight rebound effort at USC (11/11/11), Hicks followed up that game with a double-double effort of 22 points and 17 rebounds against Hawai'i. The 17 boards were only seven short of the school record set by George Robnett vs UC Irvine on Jan. 16, 1971.
Vinnie McGhee tallied eleven points, his second straight double-digit scoring effort following his 14 points in the season opener at USC (11/11/11).
Ari Feldman, who originally came to Cal State Northridge as a member of the nationally-ranked Matadors volleyball team, played well in 21 minutes against Hawai'i. Feldman captured ten points (5-for-9 from the floor) along with four rebounds.
Zane Johnson led Hawai'i with 24 points (6-for-13 from three-point territory). Trevor Wiseman added 19 points and 16 rebounds while freshman guard Shaquille Stokes added 14 points and five assists.
