Tempe, Az – Despite 18 points and ten rebounds from Stephan Hicks, the Cal State Northridge basketball team dropped an 87-76 decision at Arizona State on Saturday afternoon at ASU's Wells Fargo Arena.
Landon Drew came off the bench to add a season-high 16 points (6-for-7 from the floor, 4-for-4 from behind the arc) along with six rebounds and five assists in 22 minutes of play.
ASU's Jordan Bachynski, a 7-foot-2 junior center, became the first Sun Devil player in school history to earn a triple-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 12 blocks.
Bachynski proved to be the deciding factor in preventing the Matadors from successfully attacking the basket. Bachynski's 12 blocks set an ASU school record.
"He (Jordan Bachynski) was an extremely visible presence," said head coach Bobby Braswell. "He only scored 13 points but I felt he was probably responsible for more than 25 to 30 points with his blocked shots. He really made his presence known. It really affected us inside."
Arizona State jumped to a 7-0 lead to start the game. The Matadors managed to cut the Sun Devils lead to three points on two occasions in the first half, but ASU mounted a late first half rally to take a 41-31 halftime lead.
"We got ourselves into a deep hole but we showed a lot of hustle and fight in us," said Braswell. "But in the end, their size affected us a bit more than I anticipated it would."
The free throw differential was certainly noticeable. Arizona State marched to the free throw line 42 times compared to only 12 times for Cal State Northridge. The Sun Devils made 27-of-42 free throws compared to 10-for-12 for the Matadors.
Arizona State raised its season record to 8-1. Cal State Northridge fell to 7-3.
School finals are set for next week at Cal State Northridge. The Matadors will next play on Dec. 18 against San Diego Christian. Tipoff at The Matadome is 7:05 pm.
