Northridge, Calif. – Fourteen home games and a road date against USC, highlight the 2013-14 CSUN men's basketball schedule that was announced on Wednesday (8/21/13) by first-year Matador head coach Reggie Theus.
"I am very excited about the schedule," said Theus. "Playing a Pac-12 team (USC) in addition to competing against a Mountain West Conference team (Fresno State) along with competing in a very solid tournament at Central Michigan gives us a very competitive schedule. Hopefully we can get off to a good start and get ready for conference play in the Big West."
CSUN will begin the 2013-14 season on Friday (11/8/13) in a 7:00 pm non-league home contest against Hope International. The opposition gets a bit tougher when the Matadors invade the Galen Center to face the USC Trojans on Tuesday (11/12/13).
The journey to USC will begin a five game road trip that will include games at Fresno State (11/16/13), at the Central Michigan Tournament (11/21/13 – 11/23/13) and concludes with a non-league game at Montana State (11/26/13). The game at Montana State will be a part of the Central Michigan Tournament.
Cal State Northridge returns home for three games at the renovated Matadome. The Matadors will host La Sierra College (12/1/13, 2:00 pm) followed by home games against Southern Utah (12/3/13, 7:00 pm) and Seattle University (12/5/13, 7:00 pm).
Five more games (two at home, three on the road) will close out the non-league campaign before the Big West Conference home opener against UC Davis (1/9/14, 7:05 pm). Two days later, the Matadors host the University of Hawai'i (1/11/14).
Long Beach State, the three-time defending Big West Conference regular season champions, will conclude CSUN's 14-game home schedule on (3/6/14, 7:05 pm).
CSUN figures to be much improved in 2013-14. First-year head coach Reggie Theus inherits several key players who are not only talented, but experienced as well. The Matadors return the top three scorers from last year along with the team's top two rebounders. Stephan Hicks (15.7 ppg), Stephen Maxwell (14.6 ppg) and Josh Greene (14.5 ppg) form a trio of scorers that will lead a potent offensive attack for CSUN in 2013-14. Maxwell (8.3 rpg) and Hicks (7.0 rpg) are two of the best rebounders in the Big West Conference.
"I don't think there is any clear-cut favorite in the Big West Conference," remarked Theus. "Anything can happen."
