ESPN3 Brings Worldwide Attention To CSUN Athletics

Northridge, Calif. – Minutes after CSUN's gripping 79-78 men's basketball victory over Hawai'i on Saturday, an ESPN3 broadcaster commented "what a great game for television."

In the world of sports television, network producers anticipate a game that will be entertaining from the opening tipoff to the final buzzer. CSUN and Hawai'i gave ESPN3 a highly entertaining, competitive game.

ESPN (the worldwide in leader in sports) has a family of sports networks including ESPN3, a live multi-screen sports network accessible online at, on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app, and streamed on televisions through Xbox, Apple TV and Roku. It is available in more than 85 million households nationwide at no additional cost to fans who receive their high-speed internet connection or video subscription from an affiliated provider.

Four Matador men's and women's basketball games are on the ESPN3 docket this year. CSUN's men's basketball team has three conference games on the docket included games against UC Davis (Jan. 9) and Hawai'i (Jan. 11). The third ESPN3 men's basketball game will be on Jan. 30 when Cal State Northridge hosts UC Riverside at the Matadome. The tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.

The Matador women's basketball team will be available on ESPN3 on Jan. 22 when CSUN visits UC Irvine. Tipoff is 4:00 pm.

The four CSUN games (three men's games, one women's game) are also a publicity boom for other Cal State Northridge sports. During last Thursday's home conference contest against UC Davis, the halftime guest was Matador first-year head baseball coach Greg Moore. Saturday's halftime guest on ESPN3 was Dr. Marcelo Leonardi, head coach of CSUN's nationally-ranked women's water polo team.

Through the Big West's new mobile production facility, each game is produced by the Conference utilizing full ESPN production standards, including graphics, replay and the on-air broadcast crew.

"The Big West's basketball presence on ESPN3 expands upon what is already offered through ESPN2 and ESPNU, giving fans opportunities all season long to watch their favorite team in action," said Big West Commissioner Dennis Farrell.

Two other CSUN's men's basketball games are also on the docket as candidates for "Wild Card" games later this season. They include CSUN at UC Riverside on Mar. 1 (7:00 pm) either on ESPN2, ESPNU or ESPN3. Long Beach State at Cal State Northridge on Mar. 6 (7:00 pm) will also be under consideration on ESPN3.
