NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Four Matadors scored in double figures, led by senior Willie Galick's 19 points, as Cal State Northridge defeated Cal Lutheran, 88-67 in its exhibition opener Wednesday at The Matadome.
In addition to Galick's game-high 19 points, junior Lenny Daniel had 18 points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks in his Matador debut. Juniors Kevin Menner and Rashaun McLemore, also making their first appearance in a Northridge uniform, also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. Tony Osunsanmi came off the bench to match Gallick with a team-high eight boards.
The Matadors overcame a slow start as the visiting Kingsmen held a five-point lead (17-12) after Aaron Fisher's jumper with 10:08 remaining in the first half. But baskets by Daniel and Galick quickly cut the lead to one and Menner's jumper with 7:55 left in the half gave the Matadors the lead for good at 18-17. Northridge would outscore Cal Lutheran 19-5 over the next six minutes to open up a 37-22 cushion just before the break. CLU's John Wilson converted a layup to cut the deficit to 12 and the Matadors went into halftime up 39-27.
Northridge got a basket and a free throw from Kenny Daniels followed by a Michael Lizarraga layup immediately out of the break to open up a 44-27 lead with 18:50 left. Menner's jumper gave the Matadors their largest lead of the game at 59-36 with 13:25 remaining and Northridge never lead by less than 17 points the rest of the way.
The Matadors, who shot 58.6% from the floor in the first half, cooled a bit in the second half (52.9%) but still wound up shooting 55.6% on the night. Northridge made just 2-9 shots from long range and struggled at the free throw line, converting just 16 of 27 (59.3%) from the stripe.
For Cal Lutheran, Fisher scored a team-high 18 points to go with nine rebounds while Aaron Van Klaveren added 15 points and 10 rebounds and Kwaminique Brandon chipped in 10 points. The Kingsmen shot 39.7% from the field and were out-rebounded by the Matadors 48-30.
Cal State Northridge wraps up the two-game exhibition season on Saturday, Nov. 7 as the Matadors host The Master's College at 7 p.m. The Northridge women open the doubleheader by taking on Westmont College at 4 p.m.
