Free Throws Lift Matadors to 85-81 Overtime Win against Redlands

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge men's basketball team defeated Redlands, 85-81, in overtime in an exhibition contest at The Matadome Friday night. Dathan Lyles hit a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left in overtime to seal the victory for the Matadors.
The game was a tight contest throughout, featuring 14 lead changes and nine ties. Raymond Cody hit three free throws with 27 seconds left in the second half to send the game into overtime tied at 73-73.
In the extra period, Redlands got the first bucket, a 3-pointer by Jack Colston with 3:56 left. After that, CSUN outscored the Bulldogs, 12-5, as several players knocked down crucial free throws in the waning minutes.
Cody led all scorers with 17 points, hitting three 3-pointers in the second half for CSUN. He added three rebounds, an assist and a steal to his final line. Lyles started the game and finished with 12 points, five assists, three steals and three rebounds. He did not have a turnover in 27 minutes of action.
Josh Greene, a freshman from Lakeview Terrace, was the third Matador to finish in double-figures, scoring 12 points in the contest. He also had three steals, two assists and zero turnovers in 20 minutes of action.
Rashaun McLemore was the fourth Matador to reach double figures. He added 14 points and collected four offensive rebounds and two steals in 20 minutes of game time.
Among the frontcourt players, John Hayward-Mayhew finished with eight points and nine rebounds for Northridge. He was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line before fouling out in overtime.
As a team, CSUN shot 37.5 percent from the field (27-of-72) compared to a 43.8 percent rate for Redlands (28-of-64). However, the Bulldogs finished 17-of-29 (58.6 percent) from the free throw line, including a 10-for-21 performance in the second half. Conversely, Northridge finished 23-of-32 from the charity stripe, a 71.9 percent rate.
Redlands did win the battle on the boards, out-rebounding CSUN by 11, 55-44. The Matadors forced 25 Bulldog turnovers, resulting in 18 points for Northridge. CSUN finished with 18 steals in the game.
Northridge trailed by two at halftime, 41-39. McLemore had 10 points in the first half for Northridge.
CSUN opens the 2010-11 season with a road contest at UCLA. The Matadors and Bruins meet on Nov. 12 at Pauley Pavilion, with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m. Northridge's first regular season home game is set for Nov. 20 against Vanguard at 2 p.m. in The Matadome.
