Nov. 8, 2008
Northridge, Calif. - Deon Tresvant scored 19 points in 24 minutes of play to lead the Cal State Northridge men's basketball team to a71-52 victory over Carroll College (Montana) in an exhibition game on Saturday night at The Matadome.
Tresvant hit 7-of-14 shots from the floor, including 5-of-10 shots from behind the three-point line.
"I was patient and able to get good shots," said Tresvant, who tallied 83 three-pointers last year, second-best for a single season in school history.
Junior center Xavier Crawford came off the bench to play 16 minutes. Crawford collected ten points (4-for-4 from the floor), seven rebounds and two blocks.
The Matadors defense again looked strong. Cal State Northridge held the Fighting Saints to 20 percent shooting (11-for-54) and only 15 percent (5-for-23) from behind the arc.
In fact, the Matadors defense held Carroll College without a basket until 7:18 left in the first half.
"We made it hard for them (Carroll College) to get their shots, and we were aggressive," said Tresvant, who along with his teammates, forced Carroll College into 17 turnovers.
Despite the 19-point victory and a 2-0 record during the exhibition season, Townsend said more work is needed in order to get better.
"Practice, practice, practice," said Townsend. "That's how we improve every day. We improved defensively since our last exhibition game, so every day we are making improvements in order to be successful."
Cal State Northridge opens the regular season on Nov. 14 against Cal Lutheran. Tipoff at The Matadome will be 7:05 p.m.
"We'll be ready but we need to get back to practice in order to get better," said Tresvant.
"There are a lot things we need to work on, but tonight our defense picked up," said Jenkins, who collected seven assists and two steals in 17 minutes of play. "As soon as we get our defense and offense on the same page, that will be a tough combination to beat."
