Northridge, Calif. - Freshman guard Josh Greene scored a season-high 17 points (10-of-11 from the free throw line) off the bench, and Lenny Daniel and Dathan Lyles each tallied 16 points to lead Cal State Northridge to a highly convincing 109-66 non-conference victory over Vanguard University on Saturday afternoon at The Matadome.
"I was pleased with the win," said Matador head coach Bobby Braswell. "But I was more pleased with the two challenges that were presented ... to defend and then execute on the offensive end. I wanted to make sure we stepped onto the court to play the way we needed to play on both ends of the floor. We had the right attitude and the right body language. We met all our defensive goals. We played as good a game as we have all year. This wasn't individual accomplishment. This was team basketball."
Northridge led from the get go as senior forward Rashaun McLemore scored the first basket of the game in the opening seconds. The Matadors would not let the game get closer than a 2-2 tie for the rest of the way.
Daniel broke out of his recent slump, hitting 6-of-9 shots and 4-for-4 from the free throw line in tallying a season-high 16 points. Daniel added a game-high nine rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench.
In addition to his 16 points, Lyles dished out a career-high in assists (7) and steals (4).
The Matadors led by as many as 27 points in the first half before a run for Vanguard cut the deficit to 14. Freshman Allen Jiles IV and Daniel combined to get Northridge a 9-0 run and a 56-33 lead at halftime.
Northridge extended the run into the second half, scoring the first six points before conceding a free throw to the Lions. The Matadors extended the run to 22-1 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Daniel at the 15-minute mark.
CSUN's biggest lead of the game was 44 points, 108-64, with 1:05 to play.
Cameron Nettles led Vanguard with 18 points.
Cal State Northridge is 1-2 while Vanguard is 1-1.
