Matadors Break Even in NIT Season Tip-Off After 76-69 Victory Over Coastal Carolina
Nov. 24, 2009
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Senior forward Willie Galick put Cal State Northridge (2-3) on his shoulders in the second half as he scored 15 of his career-high 26 points as the Matadors defeated Coastal Carolina 76-69 to earn a split in the four-game Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off.
Northridge, which split two games last week in Tempe, Ariz., finished 1-1 in the consolation bracket here at E.A. Diddle Arena on the Western Kentucky campus. The Matadors could have come away with two wins but fell in the final seconds to the host Hilltoppers on Monday night.
Galick, who's previous scoring high at Cal State Northridge was 19, eclipsed that with a stellar second half that saw him convert all six of his shots from the field and three-of-five free throws. He also added a team-high 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Fellow senior Kenny Daniels overcame a slow start to post double figures for the first time this season as he scored 13 points in 22 minutes. Juniors Lenny Daniel and Raymond Cody also reached double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively. Daniel also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds for the Matadors in the win.
Joseph Harris led three Chanticleers in double figures with 20 points but hit on just seven of 15 shots. Chad Gray came off the CCU bench to added 15 points and Kierre Greenwood chipped in 10.
The Matadors had their third straight strong shooting night as they wound up shooting 50.9% (28-55) from the field. Northridge didn't help themselves from the free throw line, however, as the Matadors connected on just 18-of-30 from the stripe. Led by Galick and Daniel, Northridge out-rebounded Coastal Carolina 41-33.
The Matadors began the game with a 5-0 run capped by a Cody three-pointer but the Chanticleers quickly answered with five points of their own. The score was tied five more times over the next five minutes before a Gray three-point basket propelled CCU on an 11-4 giving the Chants a 25-18 with nine minutes left in the half. CCU eventually built its lead to 10 (38-28) before Northridge closed the half on a 6-0 run to head to the break down 38-34.
Galick made his first shot of the second half on the Matadors' second possession and Northridge quickly tied the score following a Cody layup. After the two teams traded the lead over the next five minutes, the Chants opened up a four-point lead on baskets by Harris and Dexter Moore with 12:06 to go. Coastal Carolina would hold the lead until Galick rebounded a Daniel miss and slammed it home knotting the score at 56-56 with 7:39 left on the clock.
The lead went back and forth with neither team leading by more than two points until the Matadors went up by six (70-64) on consecutive layups by Galick, Vinnie McGhee and Daniels with three minutes left.
Northridge then held the Chants to a single basket over the next 2:40 and Daniel tip-in and four Daniels free throws gave the Matadors their winning margin, 76-69.
After five straight road games to open the season, Cal State Northridge opens the home schedule next Monday, Nov. 30 as the Matadors host CSU Bakersfield at 7:05 p.m.
