Northridge, Calif. - Senior forward Kenny Daniels scored a career-high 39 points to help Cal State Northridge battle back from a 14-point second-half deficit to record a 95-93 victory over the University of Idaho in a non-league men's basketball game on Thursday night at The Matadome.
Daniel's 39 points is the most points scored by Matador player since Mark Cooley scored 40 points at Cal State Fullerton on February 18, 1967. Daniels' effort is the third-best effort in a single game in school history. Only Cooley's 40-points at Cal State Fullerton (2/18/67) and a school record 47 points by Ollie Carter vs Westmont College (2/1/66) are better.
Daniels hit 12-of-17 shorts from the floor, 13-of-15 from the free throw line along with ten rebounds. Daniels played 39 minutes.
Vinnie McGhee came off the bench to score 14 points in 17 minutes of play. McGhee hit 5-of-6 shots.
The victory raised CSUN's season record to 4-3 while Idaho fell to 4-2.
As a team, Cal State Northridge hit .525 (32-for-61) from the floor.
Five Vandal players scored in double figures. Kashif Watson scored 21 points (15-of-15 from the free throw line) while Mac Hopson added 19 points.
Idaho led 63-49 with 15:43 to play in the game. But the Matadors tied the game at 73-73 with 7:31 left on a Daniels jump shot. Daniels then put CSUN in front to stay with a three-pointer at the 5:33 mark to give CSUN a 78-77 lead. Willie Galick's two free throws, two free throws by Daniels and salm dunk by Daniels gave Cal State Northridge its biggest lead of the game, 85-77, with 3:08 remaining.
Two free throws by Mark Hill were the insurance points to give Cal State Northridge a 95-91 lead with nine seconds remaining.
Cal State Northridge jumped to a quick 7-0 lead in the game's opening two minutes, thanks in part to five straight points by Daniels and a layup by Raymond Cody.
Idaho then went on its own scoring binge. The Vandals scored eight straight points to take a one-point advantage, 8-7, with 16:06 in the first half.
The Matadors enjoyed a 24-21 lead with 9:49 left in the opening half, but eight straight free throws by Watson gave the Vandals a 29-24 lead at the 7:37 mark.
Idaho continued to build on its lead through the rest of the first half. Their biggest lead was 13 points, 49-36, with 1:27 on the first half clock. Seven straight points by the Matadors closed out the first half. Idaho enjoyed a 49-43 halftime lead.
Daniels scored 21 of the CSUN's 43 first-half points. Daniels hit 6-of-8 shots from the floor, and 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Daniels also added five rebounds in the first half.
In the first half, Cal State Northridge .484 (15-for-31) from the floor, and 11-of-13 from the free throw line for .846.
Watson was the first half star for Idaho collecting 15 points. Watson hit 11-of-11 from the free throw line. As a team, Idaho hit 13-of-15 shots from the charity stripe.
Steffan Johnson scored 13 points for Idaho in the first half.
Idaho hit .469 (15-for-32) from the floor in the first 20 minutes.
Cal State Northridge hits the road for games at Washington (Dec. 6) and at Denver (Dec. 8).
