It's back on the road for nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge ... This time a Big West game at UC Riverside (3-11 overall, 0-3 Big West) on Wednesday (1/16/08, 7:00 p.m.), and then a Jan. 26 non-league game at Chicago State ... Winners of five straight games, the Matadors are 12-3 overall and alone atop the Big West standings at 4-0 ... This is CSUN's best conference start since they moved to the Division I level in 1990-91, and overall there best league start in 30 years ... CSUN is ranked 16th in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major poll ... The latest Sagarin poll (1/13/08) finds CSUN ranked 56th in the nation, and 59th in the RPI poll (1/13/08), the team's highest ranking in school history ... In the RPI poll, CSUN is ranked ahead of four Pac-10 teams, Arizona State (69th), USC (73rd), Washington (105th) and Oregon State (248th) ... According to the ESPN Bracketology (1/14/08), if the NCAA Tournament was to start today, the Matadors would be a 13th seed and would play Butler (#4 seed) at the Anaheim Regional ... The 12-3 CSUN record is the team's best start since the 1981-82 campaign when the Matadors went 15-2.

Cal State Northridge holds a slim 29-28 advantage over UC Riverside ... However, the Matadors have won the last six meetings including a 67-60 victory last year at UCR ... Terrell Jones led CSUN with 18 points and eleven rebounds while Jonathan Heard added ten points and ten rebounds ... CSUN has won the last three games at UC Riverside.

Bobby Braswell is in his 12th season as head coach at Cal State Northridge ... Braswell has coached 340 games in his duties as head coach, and has produced a record of 180-160 (.529) ... Braswell has guided Cal State Northridge to postseason play in each of his previous eleven seasons, reaching the conference tournament championship game on four occasions ... In past seasons under Braswell, the Matadors have prided themselves on tough defense and a productive offense ... Last year, the Matadors led the Big West Conference in rebounding margin (+6.9) and steals (8.97) ... Already this year, the Matadors have forced the opponents in 311 turnovers, produced 151 steals (#1 in the Big West), and have outrebounded the opposition, 580-546 ... Jonathan Heard and Calvin Chitwood were expected to be the dominant 1-2 scoring punch for Cal State Northridge this year, and the two senior all-conference candidates have not disappointed ... Chitwood and Heard have played a total of 201 games in four seasons, and a combined 143 starts ... Heard is the second on the team in scoring (12.7 ppg, #12 in the Big West) while Chitwood is 14th (11.9 ppg) ... Chitwood is the league leader in blocked shots (1.7 bpg), sixth in rebounding (6.0 rpg), fifth in field goal percentage (.515) and seventh in free throw percentage (.810) ... Heard is fourth in field goal percentage (.526), and tenth in rebounding (5.6 rpg) ... Heard has scored in double figures in 12 of the 15 games whlie Chitwood has eleven double-digit point games ... There is no doubt the team's talented depth has contributed to the fast start in 2007-08 ... Nine players are averaging 13.4 minutes or more ... Two reserve players, Tremaine Townsend and Deon Tresvant are averaging 25.5 and 24.6 minutes per game, respectively ... Tresvant is CSUN's leading scorer (13.3 ppg), Townsend is fourth in scoring (10.0 ppg) ... Townsend, is #1 the league in rebounding (8.5 rpg), #2 in fg pct (.552) and fourth in blocked shots (1.1 bpg) ... No reserve in school history has ever led the team in scoring or in rebounding ...
