Cal State Northridge Travels to Eastern Washington in ESPNU BracketBusters Event
Jan. 31, 2011
Irvine, Calif. - An old rivalry from CSUN's Big Sky Conference days will be renewed when the Matadors travel to Eastern Washington University for the ninth annual ESPNU BracketBusters - a three-day men's basketball extravaganza pitting NCAA Tournament hopefuls against one another Feb. 18-20.
The Matadors will face the Eagles in a non-televised game in Cheney, Washington, on Saturday, February 19. Tipoff time is 7:00 pm.
Cal State Northridge and Eastern Washington have met 17 times on the basketball court with the Eagles holding a 10-7 advantage. Twelve of those games were played when both Cal State Northridge and Eastern Washington were members of the Big Sky Conference from the 1996-97 season through the 2000-01 campaign. In fact, Cal State Northridge defeated Eastern Washington in the Big Sky Conference championship game, 73-58, at The Matadome to earn CSUN's first trip to the NCAA Division I basketball tournament.
The Matadors left the Big Sky Conference after the 2000-01 season to join the Big West Conference. Eastern Washington is still a member of the Big Sky Conference.
The last meeting between the two schools took place on December 3, 2006, when the Matadors scored a 102-98 decision over the Eagles at The Matadome.
Cal State Northridge is currently 8-13 overall and resides in sole possession of second place in the Big West Conference standings at 5-3. Eastern Washington is 7-14 overall and 4-5 in the Big Sky Conference.
The two teams have played one common opponent this year. Cal State Northridge dropped two games to Seattle, 65-58 and 75-68. Eastern Washington split with Seattle. The Eagles won the first game, 95-91, but later in the season dropped a 60-51 decision.
ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network, will televise five BracketBusters games and ESPN2 five more. Either ESPN or ESPN2 will televise an 11th game on Sunday, February 20.
The nationally televised games were selected from a pool of 114 teams, the largest BracketBusters pool in the event's history.
