CSUN Road Journey Arrives At UC Riverside

A spirited, team effort in its last game against UC Santa Barbara (1/30/10) has put Cal State Northridge back in the right frame of mind ... Prior to the inspirational 76-69 victory over the Gauchos, the Matadors had suffered through three straight losses (including two straight one-point defeats), the indefinite suspension of one of best players (Lenny Daniel) and in danger of falling from the Big West Conference regular season race ... But a spirited practice last Friday, some stern words from the coaches, and some definite internal soul-searching from the players resulted in a determined effort against UCSB ... The Matadors played like champions, held the talented Gauchos to only 33 percent shooting (29 percent from 3-point territory), out rebounded the visitors (43-33) and received tough play from the entire team including top play from starters Willie Galick (19 points, nine rebounds) and Rashaun McLemore (14 points, five rebounds, three steals) and reserve play from Vincent Cordell (eight points, 3-for-4 from the field and five rebounds in 18 minutes) ... Cal State Northridge now travels to UC Riverside on Thursday, February 4, at 7:00 p.m. ... The Matadors have beaten UC Riverside eleven straight times, including five straight wins on UCR's Student Rec Center ... This will be the second meeting between CSUN and UCR ... On Jan. 14, 2010, CSUN recorded a 64-50 decision at The Matadome.
With at least eleven more games to play (eight conference, two non-conference, at least one Big West Tournament game), CSUN is on pace to break the school record for single season free throw attempts ... CSUN has attempted 627 free throws, an average of 29.9 attempts per game ... At that pace, the Matadors would finish the year with 956, easily breaking the school record of 868 (26 games) during the 1966-67 season ... The 627 charity tosses currently ranks CSUN third nationally behind Kansas State (659) and New Mexico (635), according to NCAA Statistics ... The 49 free throw attempts against Seattle (1/11/10) is third-best for a single game in school history, and the 34 free throws made against the Redhawks was fifth-best for a single game.
Six CSUN games have been decided by three points or less ... The Matadors have played three one-point games this year ... That hasn't happened since the 1992-93 campaign when CSUN played four one-point contests ... Two of the three one-point losses this year were against Big West schools, a 73-72 loss at Cal Poly (1/23/10) and a 69-68 loss to LBS (1/28/10) ... Prior to this year, CSUN had played in only three one-point games against BWC schools since joining the league in 2001-02.
Willie Galick (6-8, 225, Senior, Forward, Nanaimo, BC) has picked up the pace of his play in the last two games ... During that span, Galick has scored 33 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, hit 12-of-21 shots for 57 percent, dished out three assists, blocked two shots, and handled two steals ... Mark Hill's (5-11, 175, Senior, Guard, Los Angeles, Ca) career-high 24 points at Cal Poly (1/23/10) included career-highs in field goals (9), three-pointers (5) ... Lenny Daniel (6-7, 210, Junior, Forward, Richmond, Va) has been indefinitely suspended from the team for attitude and conduct detrimental to the team, according to head coach Bobby Braswell ... Daniel is averaging 11.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.
Cal State Northridge has seen a lot of the country during the 2009-10 season ... The travel itinerary has included games at Purdue (11/13/09), at the Pre-Season NIT Tournament at Arizona State (11/16, 11/17/09), at Western Kentucky (11/23/09), at Washington (12/6/09), at Denver (12/8/09), at Colorado (12/22/09) and at Seattle (1/19/10) ... The longest trip was the game at Purdue (11/13/09) in West Lafayette, Ind., a distance from CSUN to Purdue of 2,113 miles ... The trip from CSUN to Western Kentucky (11/23/09) was 1,847 miles.
Several Matador players are among the leaders in the Big West stats ... Kenny Daniels (6-4, 210, Senior, Forward, St. Louis, Mo) is fifth and tenth, respectively, in field goal percentage (.479) and scoring (14.1 ppg) ... Daniels also ranks fourth in free throw percentage (.800) ... Lenny Daniel (6-7, 210, Junior, Forward, Richmond, Va) ranks second at 7.9 rpg ... Daniel ranks third in blocked shots (23, 1.2 bpg) ... Vinnie McGhee (6-0, 165, RS Sophomore, Guard, Oakland, Ca) is sixth in the Big West Conference in three-pointers made at 2.0 per game.
Cal State Northridge will be among eight schools that will be a part of the fourth annual 76 Classic to be held on Thanksgiving weekend in 2010 at the Anaheim Convention Center ... In addition to the Matadors, the tourney field includes Oklahoma State (Big 12), Penn State (Big Ten), DePaul (Big East), Stanford (Pac-10), Tulsa (Conference USA), UNLV (Mountain West) and Virginia Tech (ACC) ... The 76 Classic features four games each day through three days, Nov. 25, 26 and 28 ... Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a backet-tournament format ... The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship game on Sunday, Nov. 28 ... The BWC is hosting the 76 Classic ... Games will be televised on ESPN, ESPNU and ESPN2 ... The BWC and the Honda Center (home of the NHL's Anaheim Ducks) have teamed up to form a five-year partnership to host the annual men and women's post-season basketball tournies beginning in 2011 ... The Big West Tournament is the oldest NCAA Division I post-season basketball tournament in the west dating back to 1976 ... The Big West Tournament has been held at the Anaheim Convention Center (1977-82 and 2001-2010).
The 2009-10 season marks the 52nd season of Cal State Northridge basketball ... Since the program's inception in 1958-59, the Matadors have posted an all-time record of 685-729 (.484) ... In the 1,414 games that Cal State Northridge has played since the inaugural 1958-59 campaign, the Matadors have scored 104,345 points.
Several former CSUN players are enjoying playing professional basketball in Europe ... The list includes Ian Boylan (Austria), Markus Carr (Vienna, Austria), Jayme Miller (Holland, The Netherlands), Jonathan Heard (Chile), Calvin Chitwood (Japan), Ron Haynes (Finland) and Tremaine Townsend (Prague, Czech Republic) ... Boylan (2001-05) is CSUN's second all-time leading scorer (1,160 points), Carr (1998-02) is #1 all-time in assists (767), Miller (2006-08) was a highly productive player for two seasons, Heard (2004-08) is #3 all-time in scoring (1,362 points), Chitwood (2004-08) is tenth all-time in scoring (1,170 points), Haynes (2005-09) is second all-time in three-pointers (163), and Townsend (2007-09) is ninth all-time in rebounds (537).
The latest Big West overall stats show that CSUN is first in rebounding (38.1 rpg), second in steals (7.7 spg), third in scoring offense (71.9 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (.423), and fourth in blocked shots (57, 2.7 bpg) ... The 98 points scored by CSUN over Seattle (1/11/10) is the second--best effort by a Big West team this year ... UC Davis scored 99 points against Winston-Salem State (11/15/09).
The Matador record book is in for an update in 2009-10 ... Lenny Daniel (6-7, 210, Junior, Forward, Richmond, Va) collected five blocks against UC Riverside (1/14/10), one short of the school record ... Daniel now has 23 blocks this year, and is tied for the tenth position in the CSUN record book held by Cliff Higgins (1983-84) ... Kenny Daniels (6-4, 210, Senior, Forward, St. Louis, Mo) had 13 free throws against Idaho (12/3/09) which ranks seventh-best in the school record book ... Daniels' 39 points vs Idaho (12/3/09) is third-best for a single game in CSUN history ... Only 40 points by Mark Cooley at Cal State Fullerton (2/18/67) and a school record 47 points by Ollie Carter vs Westmont (2/1/66) are better ... Daniels hit 12-of-17 shots along with 13 of 15 free throws ... Daniels completed the evening with ten rebounds in 31 minutes of play ... The 39 points is the most by a BWC player in 2009-10.
The Matadors will make five regular season television appearances during the 2009-10 season ... Cal State Northridge made its Fox Sports debut on Dec. 6 when the Matadors took on the Washington Huskies on FSN Northwest ... The Northridge-Colorado contest on Dec. 22 was seen on FSN Rocky Mountain ... The Matadors will make three appearances as part of the Big West television package ... Cal State Northridge will appear on FSN West on Feb. 6 (at Long Beach State), Feb. 17 (Cal Poly) and Feb. 27 (at UC Irvine) ... Last season, Cal State Northridge was on television a school record nine times.
UC Riverside is 8-13 overall and 2-7 in the Big West Conference ... The Highlanders are 6-4 at the Student Recreation Center, but have lost four straight games on their home court ... Cal State Northridge has dominated thte season against UC Riverside ... The Matadors have won eleven straight games against the Highlanders including the last five games on UCR's home court, the Student Rec Center ... The win streak at UCR started four years ago with a 70-60 decision on 3/3/05 followed by a 74-56 win on 2/9/06, a 67-60 nod on 1/6/07, a 66-62 win on 1/16/08, and last year's 64-56 verdict on 1/14/09 ... Earlier this year (1/14/10) at The Matadome, Kenny Daniels (6-4, 210, Senior, Forward, St. Louis, Mo) scored 17 points to lead the Matadors to a 64-50 victory ... Cal State Northridge leads the overall series, 34-28.
Bobby Braswell is in his 14th season as head coach of the Cal State Northridge Matadors ... His overall record is 213-194 (.523) ... Braswell has guided CSUN to back-to-back Big West regular season championships (2007-08, 2008-09) ... For his efforts, Braswell was awarded Big West Coach of the Year honors in both seasons ... Jim Wooldridge is in his third season at UC Riverside with a mark of 34-49 ... Wooldridge's overall record (6 seasons at Central Connecticut State, 3 seasons at Texas State, 4 seasons at Louisiana Tech, 6 seasons at Kansas State, 2-plus seasons at UC Riverside) is 346-284.
