Northridge, Ca. - The Cal State Northridge men's basketball team was seeded 15th in this year's NCAA Tournament and will face second-seeded Memphis in a first round game on Thursday, March 19, at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Game time is set for 11:25 a.m. (central time).
The Matadors will be making their second ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament following a regular season title this year in the Big West Conference, and winning the conference title with a 71-66 victory over Pacific last Saturday night.
The Matador team gathered on Sunday afternoon at the Sports Grill on the CSUN campus to watch the Selection Show special on CBS along with many family, friends and fans. When Cal State Northridge was announced as one of the tournament's 65 teams, a loud roar echoed throughout the restaurant.
"This is a great moment for the team," said head coach Bobby Braswell, who was recently named Big West Coach of the Year for a second straight season. "I can't tell you how happy and proud I am for these players. I am blessed for having the chance to coach this group of players."
The Matadors are 17-13 overall and were 11-5 during conference play.
The winner of the Cal State Northridge-Memphis game will face the winner of the California vs Maryland game on Saturday.
The Memphis Tigers, who were runner ups in last year's NCAA championship game, are 31-3. The Tigers were ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press and No. 3 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches recent polls.
"I know Memphis is a great team," said Braswell. "I know they are going to have a chip on their shoulder. I'm sure they feel like they should be a #1 seed. But I've told our team to enjoy this moment. I want them to go out there and have a lot of fun. We're going to give it our best shot."
