Cal State Northridge finished the season 11-21 overall, and 6-10 (tied for seventh with UC Irvine) in the Big West Conference ... Cal State Northridge employed 17 different lineups in 2009-10 ... Matador basketball was intense from start to finish ... Twelve games (4-8) were decided by five points ... The Matadors had never played so many games decided by five points or less in the 52-year history of Matador basketball ... Eight CSUN games (2-6) were decided by three points or less ... CSUN played four one-point games (0-4) in 2009-10 ... Three of the four one-point losses were against Big West schools, a 73-72 loss at Cal Poly (1/23/10), a 69-68 loss to Long Beach State (1/28/10) and a 113-112 overtime decision to Cal State Fullerton (2/10/10) ... Prior to this year, CSUN had played in only three one-point games against BWC schools since joining the league in 2001-02 ... CSUN hadn't played four one-point contests since the 1992-93 campaign ... Bobby Braswell completed his 14th season as head coach of the Cal State Northridge Matadors in 2009-10 ... His overall record is 216-202 (.517).
Six Cal State Northridge student-athletes completed their eligibility playing Matador basketball following the 2009-10 season ... Vincent Cordell (6-6, 210, Senior, Forward, Huntsville, Al), Kenny Daniels (6-4, 210, Senior, F/G, St. Louis, Mo), Willie Galick (6-8, 225, Senior, F/C, Nanaimo, B.C.), Mark Hill (5-11, 175, Senior, Guard, Los Angeles, Ca), Tony Osunsanmi (6-4, 190, Senior, Forward, Ontario, Ca) and Therin Taylor (6-6, 185, Senior, Forward, Richmond, Ca) played a total of 374 games (163 starts), scored 2,191 points, grabbed 1,157 rebounds, dished out 344 assists, collected 255 steals and tallied 69 blocks ... Osunsanmi and Taylor helped lead the Matadors to back-to-back Big West regular season championships (2007-08, 2008-09), a Big West Tournament title (2008-09) and a trip to the NCAA Tournament (2008-09) ... Cordell, Daniels, Galick, Hill, Osunsanmi and Taylor were all on the 2008-09 Matador team that won the Big West regular season championship, the Big West Tournament crown, and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Three school records were broken in 2009-10 ... Cal State Northridge made 624 free throws, breaking the old mark of 613 during the 2000-01 campaign ... The 933 free throw attempts broke the school record of 868 set during the 1966-67 season ... Lenny Daniel (6-7, 210, Junior, Forward, Richmond, Va) now has the single season school record of 44 blocks this year, which also is seventh-best in the career category ... The old record was 37 set by Tremaine Townsend during the 2007-08 season ... Daniel collected five blocks in three games this year (Idaho on 12/3/09, UC Riverside on 1/14/10 and Cal State Fullerton on 2/13/10), one short of the school record ... The 783 defensive rebounds are second-best in school history and only two short of the school record (785) set during the 2000-01 season ... Cal State Northridge scored 2,282 points, tied for tenth place in the school record book with the 2008-09 team ... The 431 offensive rebounds are third-best for a single season in school history ... The 1,214 total rebounds are fourth-best for a single season ... Kenny Daniels' (6-4, 210, Senior Forward, St. Louis, Mo) 39 points vs Idaho (12/3/09) are third-best for a single game in CSUN history ... Only 40 points by Mark Cooley at Cal State Fullerton (2/18/67) and a school record 47 points by Ollie Carter vs Westmont (2/1/66) are better ... The 39 points were the most by a BWC player in 2009-10 ... Daniels had 13 free throws against Idaho (12/3/09) which ranks seventh-best in the school record book ... Daniels had 498 points in 2009-10, tenth-best for a single season in CSUN history ... Daniels tallied 144 free throws, tied for fifth-best in school history with Mark Cooley (1966-67) ... Daniels' 180 free throw attempts are eighth-best for a single season ... Mark Hill (5-11, 175, Senior, Guard, Los Angeles, Ca) had 12 free throws against Cal State Fullerton (2/13/10), ninth-best in school history ... The 32 games played by Raymond Cody (6-5, 180, Junior, Guard, Lancaster, Ca), Kenny Daniels (6-4, 210, Senior, Guard/Forward, St. Louis, Mo), Willie Galick (6-8, 225, Senior, Center/Forward, Nanaimo, B.C.), Vinnie McGhee (6-0, 165, RS Sophomore, Guard, Oakland, Ca) and Tony Osunsanmi (6-4, 190, Senior, Forward, Ontario, Ca) are second-best for a single season in school history ... All the following record book stats took place vs Cal State Fullerton (2/13/10) in the classic triple overtime game (won by CSF, 113-112) - the 37 free throws made is second-best all-time at CSUN, the 49 free throw attempts are third-best for a single game, the 39 CSUN fouls tied The Matadome record originally set vs Nevada (11/17/01), the 112 points scored by CSUN is 15th-best for a single game in school history, the 61 CSUN rebounds were ninth-best for a single game in school history, and the seven CSUN team blocks were seventh-best for a single game in Cal State Northridge history.
Several CSUN players were among the stat leaders in the Big West ... Lenny Daniel (6-7, 210, Jr, F, Richmond, Va) moved to the top of the blocked shots list (44, 1.5 bpg, school record), third in rebounding (227, 7.8 rpg) and eighth in field goal percentage (.480) ... Daniel recorded a team-best eight double-doubles (points-rebounds) ... That stat was second-best in the conference behind LBS's T.J. Robinson's 17 ... Kenny Daniels (6-4, 210, Sr, F/G, St. Louis, Mo) was fourth and sixth, respectively, in field goal pct. (.506) and scoring (15.6 ppg) ... Daniels also ranked fourth in free throw percentage (.800) ... Vinnie McGhee (6-0, 165, RS So, G, Oakland, Ca) was ninth in the BWC in three-pointers made at 1.7 per game ... Mark Hill (5-11, 175, Sr, G, Los Angeles, Ca) remained fifth in the Big West Conference in steals (41, 1.4 spg).
Kenny Daniels (6-4, 210, Senior, F/G, St. Louis, Mo) was CSUN's most productive offensive player in the last ten games ... Daniels put together totals of 18, 24, 25, 19, 15, 23, 20, 26, 17 and 13 points in his last ten games (20.0 ppg) against Long Beach State (2/6/10), Cal State Bakersfield (2/10/10), Cal State Fullerton (2/13/10), Cal Poly (2/17/10), Drake (2/20/10), UC Santa Barbara (2/24/10), UC Irvine (2/27/10), UC Davis (3/4/10), Pacific (3/6/10) and Cal State Fullerton (3/10/10) ... Daniels hit 75-of-142 shots (.528) along with 52 rebounds during that span ... Lenny Daniel (6-7, 210, Junior, Forward, Richmond, Va) collected double-digit points in 13 of his last 16 games ... Six of those games were double--doubles (points/rebounds).
Cal State Northridge broke two single season records for free throw attempts with 933 and free throws made with 624 ... The 933 free throw attempts were ranked fourth nationally behind Kansas State (29-8) with 1,098, Morgan State (27-10) with 983, and Kentucky (35-3) with 971 ... The Matadors made 624 free throws, 14th-best in the country ... The old school record was 613 set during the 2000-01 season ... Kansas State (29-8) led the nation with 734 free throws made ... The 49 free throw attempts against Seattle (1/11/10) and Cal State Fullerton (2/13/10) are third-best for a single game in school history.
The classic game (2/13/10) between CSUN and CSF featured a number of mind boggling stats ... The two teams combined for225 points, 155 field goal attempts, 110 free throw attempts, 109 rebounds, 81 free throws made, 75 fouls, eleven player foul outs, 17 ties and 15 lead changes ... Ten players scored in double figures ... CSUN's bench outscored CSF's bench, 77-28 ... The Big West schools have played 15,463 games dating back to the 1921-22 season ... Only 20 of the 15,463 games have gone into triple overtime ... CSUN's 52-year basketball history includes just two triple overtime games ... CSUN is 1-1.
The final Big West overall stats showed CSUN was first in rebounding (37.9 rpg), second in scoring (71.3 ppg) and blocked shots (99, 3.1 bpg), and third in steals (239, 7.5 spg) and three-point field goal percentage defense (.345) ... The 112 points scored by CSUN vs Cal State Fullerton (2/13/10) was the second--best effort by a Big West team this year ... CS Fullerton tallied 113 points against CSUN (2/13/10).
Michael Lizarraga (6-7, 230, Junior, Forward, Dixon, Ca.) continued to be an inspiration and a hero to many people ...Lizarraga was the only deaf player competing in NCAA Division I major college basketball during the 2009-10 season ... Lizarraga was the subject of numerous feature stories including the Los Angeles Daily News (2/4/10), Fox Sports Prime Ticket,ESPNU, the Daily Sundial, ESPNLosAngeles.com, mattbrownphoto.com, Channel 4 in Los Angeles, and Channel 2 in Los Angeles ... Lizarraga was a starter in eight of the team's 32 games ... His best game of the year was an eight-point, six rebound, three block and two steal performance at Washington (12/6/09) ... Lizarraga grabbed six or more rebounds in five games ... Lizarraga was voted CSUN's Most Improved Player.
The Matadors made five regular season television appearances during the 2009-10 season ... Cal State Northridge made its Fox Sports debut on Dec. 6 when the Matadors took on the Washington Huskies on FSN Northwest ... The Northridge-Colorado contest on Dec. 22 was seen on FSN Rocky Mountain ... The Matadors made three appearances as part of the Big West television package ... Cal State Northridge appeared on FSN West on Feb. 6 (at Long Beach State), Feb. 17 (Cal Poly) and Feb. 27 (at UC Irvine).
The 2009-10 season marked the 52nd season of Cal State Northridge basketball ... Since the program's inception in 1958-59, CSUN has posted an all-time record of 688-736 (.483) ... In the 1,424 games that CSUN has played since the inaugural 1958-59 campaign, the Matadors have scored 105,131 points.
Cal State Northridge will be among eight schools that will be a part of the fourth annual 76 Classic to be held on Thanksgiving weekend in 2010 at the Anaheim Convention Center ... In addition to the Matadors, the tourney field includes Oklahoma State (Big 12), Penn State (Big Ten), DePaul (Big East), Stanford (Pac-10), Tulsa (Conference USA), UNLV (Mountain West) and Virginia Tech (ACC) ... The 76 Classic features four games each day through three days, Nov. 25, 26 and 28 ... Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a backet-tournament format ... The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship game on Sunday, Nov. 28 ... The BWC is hosting the 76 Classic ... Games will be televised on ESPN, ESPNU and ESPN2.
The BWC and the Honda Center (home of the NHL's Anaheim Ducks) have teamed up to form a five-year partnership to host the annual men's and women's post-season basketball tournies beginning in 2011 ... The Big West Tournament is the oldest NCAA Division I postseason basketball tournament in the west dating back to 1976 ... The Big West Tournament had been held at the Anaheim Convention Center (1977-82 and 2001-2010).
