Game Gossip ...
In its 50 years of intercollegiate basketball, Cal State Northridge has played 1,334 games ... Only four of those games have been played in the state of Ohio ... On Wednesday (11/28/07), the Matadors return to the Midwest to face the Vikings of Cleveland State at 7:00 p.m. (et) ... Their last visit to Ohio saw the Matadors lose two close games ... On Dec. 15, 1997, Carl Holmes scored 21 points off the bench, but it wasn't enough as CSUN lost a 89-81 decision at Ohio State ... Two nights later, Holmes tallied 20 points in his first career start as the Matadors lost a tough 79-77 verdict at Ohio ... In the two games, Holmes hit 63 percent (15-of-24) from the floor, and 75 percent (9-for-12) from three-point territory ... Against Ohio State, Holmes hit his first six shots, including five straightthree-pointers, and followed that up with a 4-for-5 performance from beyond the arc at Ohio ... For his efforts, Holmes was named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week.

Series Story ...
Cal State Northridge and Cleveland State have only met once on the basketball court ... Last year (2/17/07) at The Matadome, Joe Davis, J'Nathan Bullock and Raheem Moss combined for 49 points and 21 rebounds to lead the Vikings to a 85-76 victory ... Thomas Shewmake produced a double-double for CSUN with 16 points and eleven rebounds ... Calvin Chitwood added 15 points, six boards and two steals ... Cleveland State hit 30-of-40 free throw attempts compared to 15-of-18 for the Matadors.

Coaches Corner ...
Bobby Braswell is in his 12th season as head coach at Cal State Northridge ... Braswell has coached 328 games in his duties as head coach, and has produced a record of 171-157 (.521) ... Braswell has guided Cal State Northridge to postseason play in each of his previous eleven seasons, reaching the conference tournament championship game on four occasions ... In past seasons under Braswell, the Matadors have prided themselves on tough defense and a productive offense ... Last year, the Matadors led the Big West Conference in rebounding margin (+6.9) and steals (8.97) ... Already this year, the Matadors have forced the opponents in 64 turnovers, produced 27 steals, and have outrebounded the opposition, 126-101 ... Braswell's teams have been ranked in the Top 25 in steals nationally in ten of the last eleven seasons ... rebounding (42.0 rpg), rebound margin (+8.3), blocked shots (4.0 bpg), and second in scoring margin (+11.7), assists (17.67 apg), and steals (9.00 spg) ... Tremaine Townsend is #1 in the Big West in field goal percentage (.682) while Jonathan Heard is third (.571) and Calvin Chitwood is sixth (.533) ... Chitwood and Townsend are 1-2 in the league in rebounding and 9.3 and 8.7 rpg, respectively while Heard is seventh (6.0 rpg) ... Chitwood is first in blocked shots (1.67 bpg), and ninth in minutes played (29.3 mpg) ... Their 95.0 ppg is third-best in the nation behind VMI (102.3 ppg) and Duquesne (95.2 ppg) ... The Matadors have scored 90 or more points in each of the last three games this year ... That hasn't happened since the Matadors scored 90 or more points in five straight games to start the 1988-89 season ... Five players are averaging in double figures, six players are shooting 50 percent or better, three players are shooting 43 percent or better from three-point territory, and as a team, the Matadors are shooting .513 from the floor.

Dynamic Duo ...
Jonathan Heard and Calvin Chitwood were expected to be the dominant 1-2 scoring punch for Cal State Northridge this year, and the two senior all-conference candidates are off to great starts after three games ... Heard and Chitwood have played a total of 177 games in four seasons, and a combined 119 starts ... Heard leads the team in scoring (18.3 ppg, #3 in the Big West) and is third in rebounding (6.0 rpg, #7 in the league) while Chitwood is tops on the Matadors in rebounding (9.3 rpg, #1 in the Big West) and second in scoring (13.7 rpg, #8 in the league) ... As a duo, Heard and Chitwood are shooting .554 (36--for-65) from the floor along with ten steals and six blocks ... In the 2007-08 season opener, Heard and Chitwood combined for 51 points and 26 rebounds to help the Matadors to a 96-85 victory over Chicago State (11/10/07) ... Heard scored a career-high 29 points, including 19 in the second half, while Chitwood added 22 points ... Chitwood added to his all-around great numbers with a career-high 18 rebounds (ten offensive rebounds), four blocks and three steals in 38 minutes of play ... In addition to his career-high 29 points, Heard added three steals, one block and an assist in 35 minutes of action.

Depth Dialogue ...
There is no doubt that the team's talented depth have contributed to the fast start in 2007-08 ... Nine players are averaging 12 minutes or more ... Two reserve players, Deon Tresvant and Josh Jenkins, are averaging 27 and 20 minutes per game, respectively ... Tresvant is third on the team in scoring (13.0 ppg) while Jenkins has a team-leading 23 assists and has chipped in eleven points per game ... Another reserve, junior center Tremaine Townsend, is second on the team in rebounding (8.7 rpg, #2 in the Big West) and has
contributed 9.3 ppg.

Footnote Fact ...
The 3-0 start to the 2007-08 season is the best since the 1983-84 campaign when the Matadors won their opening four games ... The 12 assists by John Jenkins against Cal State Bakersfield (11/21/07) was three short of the school record, and eighth-best for a single game in CSUN history.

Schedule Story ...
A challenging 2007-08 schedule that includes games against national powers Gonzaga and Washington highlights the 2007-08 Cal State Northridge basketball schedule ... Cal State Northridge will face a Gonzaga team which will again be one of the nation's elite collegiate basketball teams on Dec. 8 (5:00 p.m.) in Spokane ...
