It sure is good to be back home ... After playing seven of its first eight games away from The Matadome, Cal State Northridge returns home to face Cal Lutheran in a non-league game on Tuesday, December 7, at 7:05 p.m. ... The Matadors have dominated this series, 20-to-0 ... The game will air on internet radio (www.gomatadors.com) with Bill Courtland and Alan Zinsmeister handling the broadcast chores ... Cal State Northridge is 2-6 overall while Cal Lutheran is 2-1 ... Following the game against Cal Lutheran, the Matadors have three more home games, including the opener of the Big West Conference season ... On Dec. 22, CSUN hosts Santa Clara in a non-league contest ... Then on Dec. 28, the Matadors open Big West Conference competition against Pacific (7:05 p.m.) and on Dec. 30 against UC Davis (7:05 pm).
Matador head coach Bobby Braswell is in his 15th season at Cal State Northridge with a mark of 218-208 (.512) ... Braswell has coached CSUN to a 1-0 against Cal Lutheran.
Lenny Daniel (6-8, 205, Senior, Forward, Richmond, Va) has moved to the top of the scoring charts for Cal State Northridge ... After scoring only two points and shooting 0-for-12 from the floor in the first two games of the year, Daniel has caught fire on the offensive and defensive ends of the court ... In the last four games (DePaul, Tulsa, Air Force, Denver), Daniel has averaged 21.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game while shooting .653 (32-for-49) from the floor ... Daniel has now upped his season average from 1.0 ppg in the first two games to 14.3 ppg for the season ... Daniel is now third in the Big West Conference in rebounding at 8.9 per game ... The superb performance by Daniel at the recent 76 Classic in Anaheim netted the senior forward Big West Player of the Week honors ... Daniel averaged 20.7 points (#2 in the tournament) and led all rebounders (10.3 rpg) during the three-game tournament that featured a high quality field of eight teams, five of whom competed in NCAA or NIT post-season competition last year ... In helping Cal State Northridge to an 86-66 victory over DePaul (11/26/10) of the Big East Conference, Daniel scored a career-high 31 points (11-for-15 from the floor) along with a game-high ten rebounds ... The 31 points scored by Daniel against DePaul were the most points scored by any player in the 76 Classic, and the third-best scoring effort in the four-year history of the tournament ... The 31-point, ten-rebound performance against DePaul also gave Cal State Northridge its first victory over a Big East school in the 53-year history of Matador history ... In the first game of the 76 Classic, Daniel collected a season-high 13 rebounds against Virginia Tech (11/25/10), the most by any player in the 76 Classic ... In the final game of the 76 Classic on Sunday, Daniel scored 24 points (9-for-12 from the floor) along with eight rebounds and two blocks against Tulsa ... Daniel was outstanding from the field at the 76 Classic, hitting 23-of-36 shots for .639 ... Daniel blocked four shots during the tournament to give him 49 for his career ... That moved him into sixth place all-time at CSUN ... In his last game (vs Air Force, 12/2/10), Daniel scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds ... Daniel has two double-doubles this year and ten in his two-year Cal State Northridge career.
Roster Report Cal State Northridge returns one starter who is expected to be one of the top players in the Big West Conference ... Lenny Daniel (6-8, 205, Senior, Forward, Richmond, Va) collected a single season school record 44 blocks and led the league in that category (1.52 bpg) last year ... Daniel also ranked third in the Big West with 7.8 rebounds per game ... Last year, the honorable mention BWC selection tallied 11.7 ppg, second-best on the team ... Daniel, who is averaging 14.3 ppg (#11 in the BWC) and 8.9 rpg (#3 in the BWC), provides an inside scoring threat while Vinnie McGhee (5-10, 165, Junior, Guard, Oakland, Ca), whose 53 (1.65 pg) three-pointers ranked ninth in the conference, provides scoring from the outside ... Six returning players started at least five games last year ... Schedule Saga Challenging is always the trademark of the CSUN basketball schedule, and this year is no exception ... CSUN started the years with two games against Pac-10 schools at UCLA (L, 53-80, 11/12/10) and at California (L, 63-80, 11/16/10, 7:30 pm) ... In Bobby Braswell's previous 14 years as head coach at CSUN, the Matadors have scheduled at least one Pac-10 school in 13 of those years ... The Pac-10 opponents have included Arizona State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, UCLA, Washington and Washington State ... Matador Minute CSUN is hoping to continue a couple positive trends from a year ago ... CSUN broke two single season records for free throw attempts with 933 and free throws made with 624 ... The 933 free throw attempts broke the old mark of 868 (26 games) set during the 1966-67 season ... The 933 free throw attempts were ranked fourth nationally behind Kansas State (29-8) with 1,098, Morgan State (27-10) with 983, and Kentucky (35-3) with 971 ... The Matadors made 624 free throws, 14th-best in the country ... The old school record was 613 set during the 2000-01 season ... Kansas State (29-8) led the nation with 734 free throws made ... The 49 free throw attempts against Seattle (1/11/10) and Cal State Fullerton (2/13/10) were third-best for a single game in school history ... The final Big West overall stats from 2009-10 showed CSUN was first in rebounding (37.9 rpg), second in scoring (71.3 ppg) and blocked shots (99, 3.1 bpg), and third in steals (239, 7.5 spg) and three-point field goal pct. defense (.345).
Television Tale Five Cal State Northridge men's basketball games will appear on ESPN's family of networks and Fox Sports Net ... CSUN's game at Denver (12/4/10, 4:30 pm mst) was televised on Fox Sports Net Rocky Mountain ... CSUN's three games (Virginia Tech, DePaul, Tulsa) at the 76 Classic (Nov. 25-28) were televised live on ESPNU ... One Big West Conference game will be televised on Fox Sports Net (Prime) ... That game will be CSUN's home contest against Cal Poly on Saturday, January 22 ... Game time at The Matadome is 1:00 p.m. ... CSUN will have other opportunities to be on television during the 2010-11 season ... The Kingsmen, an NCAA Division III member, has beaten La Sierra (73-56), Luther College of Iowa (55-49), but dropped their last contest to Pacific (Oregon), 68-53 ... Three players average in double-figures for Cal Lutheran ... The team scoring leader is Greg Grimm (6-3, 190, Senior, Guard, Vista, Ca) at 16.0 ppg ... Aaron Fisher (6-4, 200, Senior, Forward, Los Angeles, Ca) averages 14.0 ppg while Aaron Van Klaveren (6-7, 235, Junior, Forward. Madera, Ca) checks in at 10.3 ppg ... Final Facts For the first time in the 53-year history of Cal State Northridge basketball, the Matadors scored a win over a Big East school when they scored a 88-66 win over DePaul (11/26/10) ... Lenny Daniel, Dathan Lyles and Rashaun McLemore are serving as team captains in 2010-11.
