Game Gossip ...
The Cal State Northridge basketball team continues its recent tradition of playing at least one Pac-10 team when the Matadors travel to Seattle on Saturday (Dec. 22, 3:00 p.m.) to face the Washington Huskies (6-4) ... During the past seven years, the Matadors have faced six Pac-10 teams including UCLA (2000-01), USC (2005-06, 2003-04), Oregon (2006-07, 2002-03), Washington (2002-03), Washington State (2006-07), and Arizona State (2004-05) ... During that span, CSUN scored wins at UCLA (78-74, 11/21/00) and at USC (81-76, ot, 11/20/05) ... The 7-2 record for Cal State Northridge gives the Matadors its best start since the 1983-84 team started out 7-2 as well ... The CSUN-UW gamewill be televised on Fox Sports Northwest, and also seen in the Southern California area on Fox Sports Prime Ticket.

Series Story ...
Washington holds a 2-0 lead in the series with both games held in Seattle ... On 2/10/92, the Huskies recorded a 61-57 victory, and followed that up with a 89-80 decision on 12/28/02.

Coaches Corner ...
Bobby Braswell is in his 12th season as head coach at Cal State Northridge ... Braswell has coached 334 games in his duties as head coach, and has produced a record of 175-159 (.524) ... Braswell has guided Cal State Northridge to postseason play in each of his previous eleven seasons, reaching the conference tournament championship game on four occasions ... In past seasons under Braswell, the Matadors have prided themselves on tough defense and a productive offense ... Last year, the Matadors led the Big West Conference in rebounding margin (+6.9) and steals (8.97) ... Already this year, the Matadors have forced the opponents in 186 turnovers, produced 85 steals, and have outrebounded the opposition, 374-333 ... Braswell's teams have been ranked in the Top 25 in steals nationally in ten of the last eleven seasons ... Braswell is assisted by second year assistant coach Louis Wilson, and newcomers Stan Johnson and James Blake ... Ryan Dodd is in his first season as Director of Basketball Operations.

The Matadors are #1 in rebounding (41.6 rpg). and blocked shots (4.56 bpg), and #2 in scoring (81.7 ppg), rebound margin (+4.6), assists (15.6 apg) and steals (9.4 spg) ... Tremaine Townsend and all-conference candidate Calvin Chitwood are 1-2 in the Big West in rebounding (9.2 rpg, 7.1 rpg) ... Townsend and Chitwood are 2-and-5 in field goal percentage (.534, .523) in the league ... Townsend is fifth in blocked shots (1.3 bpg) ... Scoring Story ...
Four players are averaging in double figures, three players are shooting .515 or better, two players are shooting 41 percent or better from three-point territory, and two players are shooting 80 percent or better from the free throw line.

Defensive Data ...
Cal State Northridge is showing signs of an improved defense in 2007-08 ... The Matadors have held the opposition to only 41 percent shooting (#3 in the Big West) and has forced the opposition into 186 turnovers in nine games ... Cal State Northridge has collected 85 steals (#2 in the Big West) in the nine games ... In only two games this year has the opposition shot 50 percent or better ... In only two games has the opposition hit 40 percent or better from three-point territory.

Rebounding Raves ...
Rebounding has vastly improved for Cal State Northridge in the last three seasons ... During the 2005-06 campaign, CSUN ranked last in the Big West, but improved to second-best last year, and are currently first in the Big West averaging 41.6 rebounds per game compared to 37.0 rpg for the opposition ... In seven of the nine games, the Matadors have outrebounded its opponents ... The 50 rebounds at Pepperdine (11/17/07) is a Big West best this year ... Four CSUN players are averaging 4.7 or more rebounds per game, including a conference-leading 9.2 rebounds per game by junior center Tremaine Townsend ... Senior all-conference Calvin Chitwood is second at 7.1 rpg ... Chitwood's 18 rebounds against Chicago State (11/10/07) is a Big West best in 2007-08 ... Brockman has led the Huskies in scoring in five games including a season-high 31 points in a 83-77 victory over Utah ... Brockman has grabbed double-digit rebounds in six games including a season-high 18 against Utah ... Guard Ryan Appleby has returned to action after breaking his wrist to average 19 points in three games ... Appleby has hit 17-of-31 three-point attempts for 55 percent.

Calvin Chitwood and Jonathan Heard were expected to be the dominant 1-2 scoring punch for Cal State Northridge this year, and the two senior all-conference candidates are off to excellent starts after nine games ... Chitwood and Heard have played a total of 189 games in four seasons, and a combined 131 starts ... Chitwood is the team leader in scoring (14.0 ppg, #8 in the Big West) while Heard is 11th (12.7 ppg) ... Chitwood is the league leader in blocked shots (1.8 ppg), second in rebounding (7.1 rpg), fourth in free throw percentage (.848) and fifth in field goal percentage (.523) ... Heard is fifth in steals (1.78 spg) and eighth in rebounding (5.9 rpg) ... Chitwood has scored in double figures in eight of the nine games ... There is no doubt that the team's talented depth have contributed to the fast start in 2007-08 ... Nine players are averaging 15 minutes or more ... Three reserve players, Tremaine Townsend, Deon Tresvant and Josh Jenkins, are averaging 25.4, 22.2 and 21.0 minutes per game, respectively ... Tresvant is third on the team in scoring (11.8 ppg), Townsend is fourth in scoring (10.4 ppg) while Jenkins has a team-leading 57 assists (6.3 apg, #1 in the Big West) and has chipped in at 9.2 ppg ... Townsend, is #1 in the Big West in rebounding (9.2 rpg) and second in field goal percentage (.534).
