SEASIDE, Calif. - Matt Siporin and Kyler Sauer are each tied for 38th-place to lead the Cal State Northridge men's golf team Monday at the St. Mary's Invitational. As a team, the Matadors are tied for 13th heading into the final round.
In the 2012-13 season-opening tournament, CSUN posted team rounds of 309 and 302 and is tied with Cal Poly at 611. Both the Matadors and Mustangs are just six shots out of the top-10. The host Gaels lead the 15-team field after finishing Monday's two rounds at 575. St. Mary's carries a two-stroke lead over Fresno State into Tuesday's final round.
Fielding a squad of two returners, two newcomers and a senior who redshirted in 2011-12, the Matadors struggled in round one's 309 but posted a seven-shot improvement in round two.
Siporin, who redshirted last season, and newcomer Sauer each posted a round of 75 and 76 on Monday with Siporin posting a 75-76 and Sauer reversing that with a 76-75. Both players sit in an eight-way tie for 38th at seven over-par 151.
Junior Ryan Green opened in 36th-place with a round of 76 but slipped into a tie for 56th following a second round 78. Green currently sits at (+10) 154. Oscar Sachs, also making his CSUN debut, struggled to an opening round 83 but rebounded nicely with a second round two over 74 to move into 68th place at (+13) 157. Shane Blanchard is two strokes behind Sachs at (+15) 159 following rounds of 82-77.
The third and final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
