Final Round 297 Drops Matadors to 11th at Bill Cullum Invitational

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - The 18th annual Bill Cullum Invitational is in the books as the host Matadors finished 11th following a final round 297. Individually, senior Kyler Sauer was a bright spot for CSUN as he finished tied for eighth at four-under-par 212.

Matador head coach Jim Bracken was hoping his squad could make a run at their first Cullum championship since 2008 but the Matadors wound up with rounds of 288-295-297 to finish 11th in the 20-team field at 16-over 880.

"Kyler played great golf but I'm a little disappointed with our team finish," said Bracken. "I was expecting us to finish in the top-10 because it's our tournament and our home course. I certainly thought we would play better than we did, we're capable of much more than we showed. But we'll regroup, we'll work on our consistency and get ready for the spring season."

Sauer, who began the day 10th following rounds of 71-70 on Monday, matched his opening round one-under 71 to move up into a tie for eighth at four-under-par 212. Sauer was just five shots off the pace to begin the final round and wound up six shots behind individual medalist Daniel Chian of Long Beach State.

Chian's final round of six-under 66 was good enough to move five slots up the leaderboard and overtake defending champion Jon Rahm of Arizona State and Mark Anguiano of Cal State Fullerton by a single stroke.

Cal State Fullerton fired a final round 281 to vault past San Diego and Arizona State to claim the team title with a three-round 849.

CSUN's Michael O'Connor, playing in his first Cullum Invitational, performed better with each round but finished tied for 43rd at five-over 221 following rounds of 75-74-72. Ryan Green, who was among the leaders following a first round two-under 70, slipped into a tie for 57th at nine-over 225 with scores of 70-79-76. Steven Molumby tied for 87th at (+18) 234 with rounds of 81-75-78 while Oscar Sachs was forced to withdraw with an injury midway through the final round.

The Matadors also had four players compete as individuals with Nick Sarian finishing tied for 50th at seven-over 223 following rounds 73-71-79, Dodge Ward finishing tied for 69th at (+13) 229 following rounds of 79-76-74, Aden Louez finishing tied for 89th at (+19) 235 following rounds of 76-85-74 and Martin Dymon finishing 103rd at (+27) 243 following rounds of 88-77-78.

Bracken also singled out the Wood Ranch golf community for their collective hospitality over the three-day event.

"It was another successful tournament," said Bracken. "Wood Ranch Golf Club is a championship golf course, the players and the teams really enjoy playing here because it's a quality course with great hospitality. The members really open the course up and go above and beyond what most tournaments do."
