Nick Delio Finishes as Runner Up, Northridge 10th at Anteater Invitational

Feb. 8, 2011

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Looking for his second straight individual tournament title, Cal State Northridge senior Nick Delio fell in a one-hole playoff Tuesday at the Anteater Invitational at Big Canyon CC. As a team, the Matadors struggled to a final round 312 to finish 10th.

Delio, who carried a three-stroke lead into Tuesday's final 18 holes, finished with a (+1) 73 and was caught by UC Irvine's Bryan Harris who closed with a five under-par 67. Both players completed three rounds at five under-par 211 before Harris sank a 12-foot eagle putt on the first playoff hole to edge Delio.

Delio was bidding for his second straight individual title after closing the fall with a win at Northridge's Bill Cullum Invitational last October. The senior from Valencia, Calif. finished his first tournament of the spring with rounds of 71-67-73. His second round 67 matched his and CSUN's low round of the year, he also shot 67 in the final round of the Cullum Invitational.

The rest of the squad wasn't quite up to par on Tuesday as the Matadors were poised to make a run at the top-five but instead slipped three spots to 10th with a final round 312. Northridge finished with team rounds of 302-290-312 to finish at 904, one stroke behind ninth-place UC Riverside. The three-round score of 904 is the Matadors highest tournament score of the season by 19 shots.

Junior Matt Siporin was the only other Matador golfer to post a round in the 70's on Tuesday as he carded a (+5) 77. Siporin, who was 26th after two rounds on Monday, finished tied for 28h after rounds of 75-74-77 left him at (+10) 226.

Sophomore Chris Russo, who was just out of the top-20 following Monday's play, slipped into a tie for 38th at (+12) 228 after a final round 80. Junior Arthur Chung posted his second round of 82 on Tuesday to finish in 58th-place at (+23) 239 and senior Satch Herrmann wound up 63rd at (+37) 253 following rounds of 88-82-83.

Cal State Northridge returns to tournament play when the Matadors travel to Westlake Village to compete in the USC Collegiate Invitational at North Ranch CC on Feb. 28-Mar. 1.
