BEAUMONT, Calif. - Cal State Northridge posted its second third-place finish in three Spring tournaments as the Matadors shot a final-round 304 at the Braveheart Classic at Oak Valley G.C. Senior Casey Piper's sixth-place finish led the Matadors.
Northridge, which was four shots off the pace following two rounds on Monday, struggled to the final round 304 and were overtaken by Long Beach State (878) and tied by Santa Clara (885). The Matadors (885) put themselves in position for the team win with rounds of 295 and 286 on Monday but could not repeat those results on Tuesday. Arizona (858) won the team title in the 15-team field.
Northridge now has four top-three finishes in 2009-10 including two in the Spring.
Piper, a senior from Simi Valley, Calif., held a two-shot lead following the two rounds on Monday, but slipped to a final round 78 to slip into a tied for sixth at (+1) 217. Piper's second round 67 was one of three sub-par rounds in the tournament. The sixth-place finish is the first top-20 finish of the season for Piper and the sixth top-five finish for a Northridge golfer this season.
Arizona's Tarquin Macmanus fired a final round 66 to move to the top of the leaderboard and earn individual medalist honors with a (-6) 210.
