Northridge Sixth After Two Rounds of Del Walker Intercollegiate

March 7, 2011

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Junior Matt Siporin and senior Nick Delio are both in the top-15 after two rounds while the Cal State Northridge men's golf team is in sixth place with 18 holes to play at the Del Walker Intercollegiate at Virginia C.C.

The Matadors (363-371) posted a six-player team score of 734 and sit in sixth place, 10 strokes behind team-leading Weber State (724). Santa Clara (726) is in second, host Long Beach State (728) is third, Washington State (730) is fourth and Wichita State (732) is fifth in the 10-team field.

CSUN is just two strokes behind Wichita State and four back of Washington State.

"The course definitely played tougher in the afternoon," said Matador head coach Jim Bracken. "In the second round we made the turn good shape but we made too many mistakes down the stretch. I think shooting under par is definitley possible tomorrow so I expect we'll play a good round."

Siporin, who is looking for his first top-20 finish as a Matador, is currently tied for fourth, just six shots behind leader Gregor Main of UCLA. Siporin fired rounds of one over-par 71 and two over 72 and sits at (+3) 143 heading into Tuesday's final round. Siporin's best finish this season was a 28th place showing at the Anteater Invitational (Feb. 7-8).

"Matt hit the ball really well and is in the best position he's been in since he's played for me," said Bracken. "I expect this from Matt, he's too good a player."

Delio, who looks to continue his solid play in the spring, is tied for 12th at four over-par 144. Delio posted rounds of 71-73 and would like to add to his second place finish at UC Irvine and 14th place showing at last week's USC Invitational.

"Nick was hitting his driver so well today but his short game let him down," added Bracken.

Sophomore Chris Russo is currently tied for 27th at (+7) 147 after rounds of 72-75, freshman Jake Katz is tied for 36th at (+9) 149 following rounds of 76-73, Arthur Chung is tied for 57th at (+13) 153 after rounds of 73-80 and Ryan Green is tied for 59th at (+14) 154 after posting rounds of 76-78. Satch Herrmann is also competing individually and is tied for 64th at (+18) 158 after rounds of 83-75.

The Matadors will tee-off the final round Tuesday morning at 7 a.m.
