March 28, 2011

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior Nick Delio and sophomore Chris Russo are both tied for 10th while the Cal State Northridge men's golf team is alone in eighth place after two rounds of the OGIO Santa Barbara Intercollegiate at Sandpiper G.C.

The Matadors carded a team round of 303 in the opening round but bounced back to post a score of 296 in the afternoon round. CSUN (599) trails team-leading Oregon (561) by 38 shots but are just one stroke out of the top-five in the 16-team field.

"We struggled a little bit today, but guys played better than their scores indicated," said head coach Jim Bracken. "The course played tough and the rough was long but everyone had to play in it so no excuses. The guys feel good and they know they're capable of playing good golf."

Individually, teammates Delio and Russo are tied for 10th with four other golfers at two over-par 146. Delio, looking to bounce back from his first rough tournament of the year at Cal State Fullerton, opened Monday with a two over-par round of 74 but posted an even-par 72 in the afternoon. Russo opened with a four over-par 76 but closed with a blistering two under-par 70. The six players trail Oregon players Jack Dukeminier and Robbie Ziegler who are tied at five under-par 139.

Arthur Chung is tied for 44th at (+10) 154 after rounds of 78-76, Satch Herrmann is tied for 54th at (+12) 156 after rounds of 75-81 and Matt Siporin is tied for 61st at (+13) 157 after rounds of 79-78.

Freshman Ryan Green, competing individually, is tied for 74th at (+16) 160 after carding rounds of 76-84.

Only six players are under par through two rounds as the 16 teams will play the final round on Tuesday morning. The first group will tee-off at 8:00 a.m. The leaders, Oregon and UCSB, will start at approximately 9:00 a.m.
