Nick Delio Tied for Seventh at NCAA West Regional After Solid First Round (-2) 70

May 19, 2011

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge senior Nick Delio fired an opening round (-2) 70 on Thursday and is tied for seventh with 36 holes yet to play at the NCAA West Regional at The Farms G.C.

Delio, competing as one of 10 individuals at the San Diego Regional, won the 2010 NCAA Southwest Regional as an individual at Carlton Oaks G.C. in Santee, Calif.

On Thursday, Delio opened the front nine with birdies on No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 and had pars on five other holes before a double-bogey seven on the par-five ninth left him at one under-par 35.

The senior from Valencia, Calif., quickly responded by making birdie on the first two holes on the back nine to move to three under-par. But bogeys on holes 12 and 13 caused Delio to slip back to one under. After making par on the next four holes, he birdied the par-five 18th to finish one under-par on the back nine and two under-par for the day.

"Other than the mishap I had on No. 9, I played really well today," said Delio. "I drove it consistently long and straight and hit a lot of great wedge shots. I'm pleased with my play in round one."

Delio is currently tied with four others at two-under 70 and trails individual leader Jeffrey Kang of USC (66) by four shots. Dylan Frittelli of Texas and USC's Steve Lim are tied for second at four-under 68 while a trio of golfers share fourth-place at three-under 69.

The second round is scheduled for Friday, May 20 with the final round on Saturday, May 21.
