Nick Delio Captures NCAA Southwest Regional Championship

May 22, 2010

SANTEE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge junior Nick Delio added another chapter to his remarkable Matador career as he claimed individual medalist honors at the NCAA Southwest Regional to advance to the NCAA Championship.

Delio carded a final round 73 which was just enough to hold off Oregon's Daniel Miernicki by one stroke. Delio's three round score of three under-par 213 advances him to the NCAA Championships June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Delio also becomes the first Matador player to advance to the NCAA Championships since Cal State Northridge moved up to the Division I level in 1991. The Matadors last had a Division II champion in 1990 when Bob Burns won the national championship.

Delio's post tournament quotes:

On winning the tournament: "First of all, it's just an honor to qualify (for NCAA regionals) because there are only 60 individuals in the whole nation that get to qualify, so I'm just very thankful. Winning (the regional) is just surreal - this is a little crazy - it's just surreal."

On if this golf course just fits his game: "The course is really long. You can miss a few shots here and there, but you need to be pretty sharp overall. I putted really well this week and that helped a lot."

On if he was nervous in the final round: "I was pretty nervous throughout the day. It was so hard to judge the distance for all of these shots, because the wind was swirling all day. The first two days it was pretty consistent - blowing (one) way - but today it was really swirling around, so it made it a lot more challenging."
